Georgia Bulldogs Dominate Bellarmine in Season Opener
ATHENS, Ga. (Interstat) — In a dominant season-opening performance, the Georgia Bulldogs overwhelmed the Bellarmine Knights with a relentless defensive effort and a balanced offensive attack, cruising to a 104-59 victory in a non-conference men’s basketball game Monday night at a near-capacity Stegeman Coliseum.
The game, played before an announced crowd of 6,187, was never in doubt as the Bulldogs lived up to their billing as heavy pregame favorites. From the opening tip, Georgia’s superior size, speed, and pressure proved too much for the visiting Knights to handle.
Georgia set the tone early, forcing Bellarmine into a series of mistakes that fueled a potent transition game. The Bulldogs closed the first half on a strong run to take a 49-29 lead into the locker room and showed no signs of letting up after the break, outscoring the Knights 55-30 in the second half to seal the emphatic win.
The statistical disparity between the two teams was stark, illustrating the one-sided nature of the contest. Georgia’s defensive pressure was the story of the night, as the Bulldogs forced Bellarmine into 21 turnovers while committing only six themselves. Georgia capitalized on those mistakes, converting them into easy scoring opportunities and finishing the game with 16 steals.
Offensively, the Bulldogs were ruthlessly efficient. They scored 104 points on 78 possessions, an offensive rating of 133.4 that showcased their ability to generate high-quality shots. Georgia shot 54 percent from the floor, connecting on 38 of 70 field goal attempts. They were also nearly flawless from the free-throw line, making 19 of 21 attempts.
Bellarmine, by contrast, struggled to find any offensive rhythm against Georgia’s swarming defense. The Knights managed just 59 points on 76 possessions, resulting in an offensive rating of 77.8. They shot 40 percent from the field and were hampered by their 21 giveaways, which stifled any attempt at mounting a comeback. Jack Karasinski was the lone bright spot for the Knights, leading all scorers with 23 points and pulling down eight rebounds in 23 minutes of action.
While Karasinski had a strong individual performance, Georgia’s victory was a testament to its depth and collective effort. Ten different Bulldogs found the scoring column, with two players tying for the team lead.
Blue Cain and Jeremiah Wilkinson each poured in 15 points to pace the Bulldogs. Cain, a guard from Knoxville, Tennessee, added four rebounds in his 21 minutes, while Wilkinson, a guard from Powder Springs, Georgia, contributed two rebounds, an assist and a block in an equally efficient 21-minute outing.
The Bulldogs’ frontcourt depth was on full display throughout the game. Forward Jake Wilkins came off the bench to provide a significant spark, scoring 12 points in just 14 minutes. The sizable interior presence of Somto Cyril, a 6-foot-11 center from Nigeria, was felt on both ends of the floor as he tallied eight points, six rebounds and two blocks.
The distribution of contributions was widespread. Dylan James nearly recorded a double-double with nine points and six rebounds. Kanon Catchings and Kareem Stagg each added nine points, while Justin Bailey and starting point guard Marcus Millender chipped in eight points apiece. Millender also directed the offense effectively, dishing out three assists and grabbing five rebounds.
With the win, Georgia begins its season with a record of 1-0. The Bulldogs will look to build on this momentum when they return to Stegeman Coliseum to host Maryland-Eastern Shore on Wednesday. Their early-season schedule also includes a home matchup against in-state rival Georgia Tech on Nov. 14 and a neutral-site game against Xavier in Charleston, South Carolina, on Nov. 21.
The loss drops Bellarmine to 0-1 to start the year. The Knights face a quick turnaround and a challenging road test, as they are scheduled to travel to face Kansas State on Saturday. Their upcoming slate also features a road game at Notre Dame on Nov. 19 and a contest at Murray State on Dec. 6.
The final score of 163 combined points fell well under the pregame over/under line of 151.5, a fact largely attributable to Bellarmine’s offensive struggles. However, the result was never in question, with Georgia’s victory probability calculated at over 99 percent before the game. The Bulldogs not only covered the pregame spread of 22.5 points but exceeded it by a wide margin, signaling a potent start to their 2025-26 campaign.
