VCU Rolls Past Wagner in Season Opener Behind Balanced Scoring Attack

RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — In a dominant season-opening performance that lived up to its billing as a heavy favorite, the Virginia Commonwealth men’s basketball team overwhelmed Wagner from the opening tip, cruising to a 103-74 victory Monday night before a crowd of 7,637 at the Siegel Center.

The Rams, projected by the Interstat’s ELO system with a 99.30 percent probability to win, showcased a potent and balanced offensive attack, exceeding the pregame point spread of -25.5 with ease. The game’s total score of 177 points dramatically surpassed the over/under line of 131.5.

VCU’s offensive efficiency was the story of the night. The Rams scored 103 points on 79 possessions, translating to an elite offensive rating of 130.8. In stark contrast, Wagner managed just 74 points on 78 possessions, an offensive rating of 94.4, as they struggled to find consistent offense against VCU’s defensive pressure.

The Rams seized control early, building a 51-40 lead by halftime and never relenting. They outscored the Seahawks 52-34 in the second half, turning the contest into a decisive rout. The victory pushed VCU’s record to 1-0 to start the campaign, while Wagner dropped to 0-1.

VCU’s offensive firepower was distributed across a deep and talented roster. Brandon Jennings led the charge with a well-rounded performance, contributing 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists in 26 minutes of action. Lazar Djokovic provided a massive scoring punch off the bench, pouring in a game-high 21 points in just 19 minutes, adding five rebounds and two blocks.

The Rams’ backcourt was particularly effective. Terrence Hill Jr. scored 17 points and dished out five assists, while Nyk Lewis filled the stat sheet with 10 points, five rebounds and five assists. Jadrian Tracey added 13 points, five rebounds and three assists, and Michael Belle chipped in 12 points, three rebounds and two blocks.

As a team, VCU shot 50 percent from the floor, connecting on 34 of 68 attempts. They were sharp from beyond the arc, making 14 of 34 three-pointers, and aggressive in getting to the free-throw line, where they converted 21 of 31 attempts. The Rams also dominated defensively at the rim, recording nine total blocks and 10 steals, which contributed to 15 Wagner turnovers.

Wagner, unable to match VCU’s offensive execution or defensive intensity, was led by Sam Smith’s 16 points. Huascar Cuevas added 13 points, and Jaden Baker finished with 11 points and four assists. Binael Basil was a bright spot on the glass, pulling down nine rebounds in just 15 minutes of play.

The Seahawks shot 39.7 percent from the field, making 25 of 63 shots. They were more efficient from three-point range, hitting 7 of 17, but were outrebounded 44-35 overall. Wagner’s 15 turnovers and only seven assists highlighted their difficulties in handling VCU’s defensive pressure.

The game’s statistical profile underscored VCU’s comprehensive dominance. The Rams bested the Seahawks in nearly every major category: offensive rebounds (14 to 11), assists (10 to 7), steals (10 to 7), blocks (9 to 3), and committed fewer turnovers (10 to 15).

Looking ahead, VCU immediately turns its focus to a neutral-site clash against Utah State this Friday in Frisco, Texas. The Rams’ non-conference schedule also features home games against Saint Peter’s, Coppin State, and a road test at North Carolina State.

Wagner, meanwhile, faces a challenging stretch of road games, beginning with a trip to face Seton Hall on Friday. Their upcoming schedule includes visits to Fordham, Maryland-Baltimore County, and a high-major test at Maryland on Dec. 2 before returning home for a game against Maryland-Eastern Shore on Dec. 17.

Monday’s contest served as a powerful opening statement for a VCU team that operated with precision and power, efficiently dispatching an overmatched opponent and setting a high bar for the season ahead.
