Arkansas Routs Southern in Season Opener Behind Balanced Scoring Attack

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Interstat) — In a dominant season-opening performance Monday night, the Arkansas Razorbacks overwhelmed the Southern Jaguars, cruising to a 109-77 victory before a capacity crowd of 19,200 at Bud Walton Arena.

The game was never in doubt, as the Razorbacks lived up to their billing as heavy pregame favorites, covering the 24.5-point spread with ease. The contest also shattered the over/under line of 149.5, with the two teams combining for 186 points in a fast-paced, high-scoring affair that heavily favored the home team from the opening tip.

Arkansas established its authority early, exploding for 57 points in the first half while building a commanding 25-point lead. Southern, despite a respectable offensive output of 32 points in the opening period, could not keep pace with the Razorbacks’ offensive firepower and defensive pressure. The Jaguars found more rhythm after halftime, scoring 45 points, but Arkansas continued its efficient scoring with 52 points in the second half to seal the lopsided win.

The statistical disparity between the teams was stark, illustrating the Razorbacks’ comprehensive control of the game. Arkansas operated with devastating efficiency, scoring 109 points from 82 possessions for an offensive rating of 133.3. Southern, by contrast, managed 77 points from 81 possessions, resulting in a far less efficient offensive rating of 94.6.

Arkansas’s offensive success was built on superior shooting and ball movement. The Razorbacks connected on 37 of 73 field goal attempts, while the Jaguars shot 27 of 69. From beyond the arc, Southern actually held an edge, making 12 of 27 three-point attempts compared to Arkansas’ 10 of 28. However, the game was decisively won at the free-throw line, where Arkansas was nearly flawless, converting 25 of 29 attempts. Southern struggled profoundly from the charity stripe, making only 11 of 24 attempts.

Defensively, Arkansas was relentless, generating 10 steals and forcing Southern into 12 turnovers while committing only nine themselves. The Razorbacks also shared the ball effectively, tallying 10 assists as a team. The Jaguars managed just three assists for the entire game, highlighting their difficulties in creating cohesive offensive sets against the Arkansas defense. The Razorbacks also won the battle on the offensive glass, securing 14 rebounds to Southern’s 11.

Individually, the Razorbacks were led by a trio of standout performers. Trevon Brazile recorded a double-double, dominating the interior with 25 points and 11 rebounds in 27 minutes of action. He was complemented by the backcourt duo of Meleek Thomas and Darius Acuff Jr. Thomas filled the stat sheet with 21 points, six rebounds and a team-high seven assists. Acuff Jr. contributed 22 points and four assists. Isaiah Sealy also reached double figures off the bench with 12 points.

Further demonstrating the team’s depth, D.J. Wagner facilitated the offense with seven assists to go along with eight points, while Nick Pringle was a force on the boards, pulling down eight rebounds.

For the Southern Jaguars, Michael Jacobs provided a bright spot, leading all scorers with 22 points and four assists in 31 minutes. Fazl Oshodi added 15 points, and DaMariee Jones chipped in nine points and a team-high seven rebounds in the losing effort.

With the win, Arkansas begins its season with a record of 1-0 and will look ahead to a major early-season test on the road against the Michigan State Spartans this Saturday. Southern, falling to 0-1, faces a quick turnaround with a challenging road game against the Marquette Golden Eagles on Wednesday. The game unfolded largely as expected according to advanced metrics, with the Interstat ELO system having given Arkansas a 97.90 percent probability of victory prior to tipoff. The Razorbacks not only confirmed that projection but exceeded it with a performance that showcased their potent offensive capabilities.
