Aggies Outlast Wildcats in High-Scoring SEC Showdown

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Interstat) — In a Southeastern Conference clash defined by offensive firepower and a decisive disparity in execution, the Texas A&M Aggies outgunned the Kentucky Wildcats 96-85 on Tuesday night at Reed Arena.

A crowd of 8,062 saw the Aggies (20-10, 10-7 SEC) use a blistering first-half shooting display to build a lead the Wildcats (19-11, 9-8) could never overcome, despite a valiant second-half push. The game, which featured 181 total points, far surpassed the pregame over/under line of 158.5.

The most critical phase of the contest unfolded in the latter stages of the first half. Leading 31-28 with just over four minutes remaining, Texas A&M unleashed a devastating 14-5 run to close the period, transforming a tight battle into a commanding 45-33 halftime advantage. The catalyst was Spanish guard Ruben Dominguez, who came off the bench to score 11 points during that decisive stretch, including three three-pointers. His final triple of the half, assisted by Pop Isaacs with 37 seconds left, pushed the lead to 12 and sent the Aggies into the locker room with full momentum.

Kentucky, which entered the game having won four of its last five, struggled to match Texas A&M’s offensive efficiency throughout the opening half. While the Wildcats shot a respectable 44% from the field, they were undone by the Aggies’ 48% shooting and a remarkable 7-of-15 performance from beyond the arc. Texas A&M also capitalized at the free-throw line, making 12 of 18 attempts, while Kentucky managed only 5 of 10.

The second half saw Kentucky, led by the dynamic scoring of Otega Oweh, attempt to mount a comeback. The Wildcats scored 52 points after halftime, cutting a 16-point deficit down to as few as seven on multiple occasions. A driving layup by Mouhamed Dioubate made it 79-72 with just over four minutes to play, forcing an Aggies timeout.

Each time Kentucky threatened, however, Texas A&M had an answer, usually in the form of a three-pointer or a trip to the foul line. Rylan Griffen, who led the Aggies with 21 points, hit a crucial three-pointer with 10:37 left to stifle one Kentucky run. Later, with the lead trimmed to seven, Dominguez connected on another three-pointer at the 9:08 mark to push the margin back to 10. The Wildcats never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.

The statistical sheet told the story of Texas A&M’s victory. The Aggies were markedly more efficient, posting an offensive rating of 127.1 points per 100 possessions compared to Kentucky’s 111.4, despite both teams having an identical 76 possessions. Texas A&M won the game from the perimeter and the charity stripe, making 13 three-pointers to Kentucky’s 8 and outscoring the Wildcats 27-17 at the free-throw line. The Aggies also protected the ball better, committing only seven turnovers while forcing 12, which led to an 8-4 advantage in steals.

Oweh was brilliant in defeat for Kentucky, scoring a game-high 24 points and adding five assists. Dioubate provided a significant spark off the bench with 19 points. For Texas A&M, Dominguez’s 17 points off the bench were pivotal, while Isaacs orchestrated the offense with eight assists. Zach Clemence contributed 13 points and two blocks, and Rashaun Agee added 14 points and nine rebounds.

The victory solidified Texas A&M’s position in the upper tier of the SEC standings as the regular season winds down, while Kentucky will look to regroup before its home finale against Florida on Saturday. Texas A&M travels to face LSU on the same day.
