George Mason at Rhode Island

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (Interstat) — The Atlantic 10’s hottest team hits the road Saturday as the No. 18-1 George Mason Patriots visit the Rhode Island Rams at the Ryan Center.

George Mason, boasting the nation’s attention with a stellar record, looks to continue its dominant run. The Patriots have won eight straight, including a 61-50 victory over these same Rams just three weeks ago in Fairfax. Their offense is powered by guard Riley Allenspach, who is averaging 18.4 points over his last seven games. He scored 18 in Monday’s 69-64 win over George Washington.

Rhode Island (11-8) seeks to protect its home court and secure a season-defining upset. The Rams are coming off a narrow 69-68 road victory at Richmond on Wednesday, fueled by 18 points from guard Tyler Cochran. Cochran, the team’s key scorer, was held to 8 points in the earlier loss to George Mason’s stout defense.

The matchup pits George Mason’s elite efficiency against a Rhode Island squad fighting for consistency in conference play. The Patriots’ only loss came at Virginia Tech in early December, and they have since reeled off 12 consecutive wins. Rhode Island has struggled against the top of the A-10, with recent losses to VCU and Loyola Chicago.

A focal point will be the backcourt duel between Allenspach and Cochran. If the Rams’ defense can contain Allenspach and force turnovers in the hostile Ryan Center environment, an upset is possible. However, George Mason’s depth and poise under pressure have been trademarks of their remarkable season.

Tip-off is set for Saturday afternoon in a critical conference clash. George Mason aims to solidify its standing atop the A-10, while Rhode Island looks to play spoiler and bolster its resume.
