Redhawks Dominate Leathernecks in Conference Opener

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (Interstat) — BJ Ward scored 23 points and dished five assists as Southeast Missouri State dominated Western Illinois 73-50 in an Ohio Valley Conference men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at the Show Me Center.

The Redhawks improved to 8-7 overall, while the Leathernecks fell to 4-11.

The most important part of the game was a decisive 20-2 run by Southeast Missouri State that spanned the end of the first half and the beginning of the second, transforming a competitive contest into a lopsided affair. With just over three minutes remaining in the opening period and Western Illinois trailing 27-25, the Leathernecks committed three consecutive turnovers. The Redhawks capitalized ruthlessly, with Ward drilling a 3-pointer and Marqueas Bell converting two free throws after a steal. After a Lucas Lorenzen 3-pointer for Western Illinois cut the deficit to 32-27, the Redhawks closed the half with a Ward layup, then opened the second period with six unanswered points, including a turnaround jumper from Landren Blocker and a driving layup from Isaiah Griffin that was answered by a Ward jump shot. The surge put Southeast Missouri State ahead 38-27 and Western Illinois never recovered, never cutting the deficit to single digits again.

The Redhawks’ victory was built on overwhelming defensive pressure and efficient interior scoring. They forced 13 Leathernecks turnovers and converted them into 27 points, while also holding a commanding 44-18 advantage in points in the paint. Western Illinois struggled offensively all afternoon, shooting just 32.6% from the field and a frigid 18.8% from 3-point range. Their offensive rating of 80.2 on 62 possessions underscored the difficulty of generating clean looks against the active Southeast Missouri State defense, which recorded nine steals.

Ward, a 6-foot guard from St. Louis, led all scorers and orchestrated the offense effectively in his 30 minutes. He was complemented by Marqueas Bell of Kansas City, who added 11 points, and Luke Almodovar of Noblesville, Indiana, who chipped in 13 points off the bench. Brendan Terry of Santa Monica, California, provided a strong interior presence with 10 points and a block.

Western Illinois was led by Lucas Lorenzen of Milford, Iowa, who scored 16 points. Isaiah Griffin of Raleigh, North Carolina, was the only other Leatherneck in double figures with 10 points. The team managed only three assists against 13 turnovers, highlighting their offensive disarray.

Southeast Missouri State led 34-27 at halftime and extended its lead throughout the second half, outscoring Western Illinois 39-23 after the break. The Redhawks shot 53.8% from the field for the game and posted an offensive rating of 114.0.

The game drew an attendance of 1,846. Southeast Missouri State, which was installed as a 14.5-point pregame favorite, covered the spread with ease. The combined score of 123 points fell well under the over/under line of 146.5.

Southeast Missouri State next travels to face Southern Indiana on Thursday. Western Illinois returns home to host Tennessee State on Thursday.
