George Mason Defeats Rhode Island in Defensive Atlantic 10 Contest
FAIRFAX, Va. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by frigid shooting and grinding possessions, the George Mason Patriots methodically dispatched the Rhode Island Rams 61-50 in an Atlantic 10 Conference men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at EagleBank Arena.
The Patriots, improving to 14-1 overall and 1-0 in the league, never trailed after the opening minutes but could never fully shake a Rhode Island team that stayed within striking distance despite an anemic offensive performance. The Rams fell to 9-6, 0-1.
The most critical stretch of the game came late in the first half, as George Mason transformed a narrow edge into a working margin. Leading 23-21 with under six minutes to play before halftime, the Patriots unleashed a 10-2 run. The surge was fueled by their top performer, Stas Sivka, who connected on a layup, and key contributions from Riley Allenspach, who dunked off a feed from Kory Mincy, and Masai Troutman, who buried a three-pointer. That sequence pushed the lead to 31-23 and sent the Patriots into the locker room with a 31-26 advantage, a cushion built largely on Rhode Island’s self-inflicted wounds and their own superior efficiency.
George Mason’s offense was far from explosive, but it was decisively more effective than Rhode Island’s. The Patriots scored 61 points on just 62 possessions, an offensive rating of 97.8. The Rams, by stark contrast, managed only 50 points on 64 trips, an offensive rating of 77.8. Rhode Island’s shooting woes were comprehensive: 19 of 54 from the field (35.2%), 9 of 31 from three-point range (29.0%), and a crippling 3 of 9 from the free throw line.
Sivka, a 6-foot-10 sophomore from Celje, Slovenia, was the game’s standout, delivering 17 points, six rebounds, two assists, a block, and two steals in 31 minutes. His activity on both ends provided a steadying force. He was supported by Emmanuel Kanga, who added eight points and four rebounds, and Mincy, who chipped in nine points, six rebounds, and four assists.
Rhode Island was led by Myles Corey’s 12 points and Keeyan Itejere’s 10 points, six rebounds, and three blocks. Tyler Cochran added eight points and seven rebounds for the Rams, who were hampered by 12 turnovers that George Mason converted into 13 points.
The Patriots maintained their lead throughout the second half, answering every modest Rhode Island push. When the Rams closed to within 44-41 on an RJ Johnson three-pointer with 12:08 remaining, George Mason responded with a 6-0 spurt, capped by a Sivka hook shot and a Fatt Hill three-pointer, to restore a nine-point advantage. Rhode Island would not get closer than seven points the rest of the way.
George Mason also won the battle inside, outscoring Rhode Island 22-16 in the paint and capitalizing on second chances despite being out-rebounded on the offensive glass 6-3. The Patriots’ defense was the constant, holding the Rams to their second-lowest point total of the season.
The game’s final score of 111 combined points fell dramatically under the pregame over/under line of 142.5, underscoring the defensive nature of the contest. George Mason entered as a 6.5-point favorite according to sportsbooks, a margin they covered with their 11-point victory.
A crowd of 4,086 watched the Patriots continue their strong start to the season, while the Rams will look to regroup after a conference opener where their defense kept them in the game but their offense could not provide enough firepower.
George Mason next travels to face Fordham on Wednesday. Rhode Island returns home to host La Salle, also on Wednesday.
