Pacific at San Diego

SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — The Pacific Tigers, riding a wave of offensive momentum, will look to continue their strong non-conference play when they visit the San Diego Toreros in a West Coast Conference men’s basketball matchup Sunday at Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Pacific (9-4) enters as the favorite, carrying a -3.5 point spread, and brings a potent attack that has scored 95 and 104 points in its last two victories. The Tigers are coming off a 95-82 win over Nicholls State on Dec. 21, where TJ Wainwright scored 23 points and Elias Ralph added a game-high 25.

Wainwright, a key player to watch for Pacific, has been inconsistent but explosive. After being held to four points in a road loss to BYU, he bounced back with his 23-point performance. His scoring will be central against a San Diego defense that has allowed an average of 80.3 points in its five losses against Division I opponents this season.

San Diego (5-7) seeks stability after a 56-86 road loss to Washington on Monday. The Toreros have struggled against higher-caliber competition, with all seven losses coming against D-I teams. Guard Juanse Gorosito, coming off a 15-point effort against the Huskies, will be relied upon to generate offense. He has averaged 11.3 points over his last three games.

The Toreros have found some success at home, including a narrow 82-80 win over UC San Diego on Dec. 19, but will face a Pacific team with a proven road record. The Tigers have notable away wins at Air Force and Long Beach State this season.

The over/under for the game is set at 149.5 points, a line that aligns with Pacific’s recent high-scoring outings and San Diego’s defensive vulnerabilities. This contest serves as the WCC opener for both schools ahead of a demanding conference slate.

For Pacific, the game begins a crucial two-game Southern California trip before hosting Oregon State. San Diego faces a quick turnaround, hosting Gonzaga just two days later on Tuesday. Sunday’s matchup offers the Toreros a final opportunity to build confidence before that daunting test.
