Oregon State Edges Arizona State in Tight Pac-12 Contest
TEMPE, Ariz. (Interstat) — In a game defined by its final, frantic seconds, Josiah Lake’s clutch free throws with six seconds remaining lifted Oregon State to a 78-75 upset victory over Arizona State on Sunday at Wells Fargo Arena.
The Beavers, who entered as 12.5-point underdogs, snapped a two-game skid and improved to 7-6. Arizona State, which had an 85% probability to win according to pregame analytics, fell to 9-4.
The contest was a tale of contrasting strengths. Arizona State dominated inside, outscoring Oregon State 38-22 in the paint and 19-9 on fast breaks. The Sun Devils also shot an efficient 21 of 24 from the free-throw line. However, their offense faltered from the perimeter, making just 4 of 19 three-point attempts. Oregon State countered with superior outside shooting, hitting 10 of 28 from deep, and won the rebounding battle 36-30, including a 10-6 edge on the offensive glass.
Lake, a 6-foot-2 guard from Tualatin, Oregon, was the catalyst for the Beavers. He played 39 minutes and finished with 23 points, five rebounds and nine assists, orchestrating the offense and repeatedly drawing fouls in critical moments. His backcourt mate, Dez White, added eight points and four assists.
Arizona State was led by Maurice Odum’s 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists. The Sun Devils’ size inside was a constant problem for Oregon State, as 7-foot-1 center Massamba Diop scored 16 points and 6-foot-11 forward Santiago Trouet added 13 points and two blocks.
The game’s pivotal sequence unfolded in the closing half-minute with the score tied at 75. After an Oregon State timeout, Lake drove into the lane but had his shot blocked by Diop. The loose ball was corralled by Oregon State’s Jorge Diaz Graham, who was immediately fouled with 12 seconds left. Diaz Graham missed the first free throw, keeping the game deadlocked.
On the ensuing inbound play, Arizona State’ Maurice Odum attempted to push the ball upcourt but had his pass intercepted by Oregon State’s Dez White near midcourt. White quickly fed the ball to Lake, who was fouled by Noah Meeusen on a drive to the basket with just six seconds on the clock. Lake, calmly sinking both free throws, gave the Beavers a 77-75 lead.
Arizona State’s final chance to tie or win evaporated immediately. On the inbound pass, Diop’s errant throw was stolen by Lake, who was fouled again. He made one of two free throws to seal the three-point victory, as a last-gasp heave by Arizona State fell short.
The game had been tight throughout, featuring 10 ties and 13 lead changes. Arizona State led 40-38 at halftime, but Oregon State’s more efficient offense, which posted a 114.7 rating on 68 possessions compared to Arizona State’s 106.5 on 70 trips, proved decisive down the stretch. The Beavers also capitalized on their trips to the line, making 18 of 21 free throws.
For Oregon State, Diaz Graham provided a crucial boost off the bench with nine points and nine rebounds. Noah Amenhauser, a 7-foot-2 center from Goodyear, Arizona, added 10 points. For the Sun Devils, Bryce Ford and Anthony Johnson each contributed nine points.
The victory marks a significant road win for Oregon State as it heads into a non-conference matchup with Santa Clara on Dec. 28. Arizona State will look to regroup before opening its conference slate at home against Colorado on Jan. 3.
