Ohio State Pulls Away From Grambling in Second Half
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Interstat) — In a game defined by its contrasting halves, the Ohio State Buckeyes used a dominant second-half surge to pull away from the visiting Grambling State Tigers for an 89-63 victory in non-conference men’s basketball action Tuesday afternoon at Value City Arena.
A crowd of 10,697 saw the Buckeyes, now 9-3, shake off a sloppy and competitive first half to outscore the Tigers 50-39 after intermission. Grambling, which fell to 5-7, hung tough early, leveraging an aggressive defense to stay within 39-24 at halftime, but could not match Ohio State’s offensive efficiency down the stretch.
The most pivotal segment of the game occurred in the opening minutes of the second half, when Ohio State decisively extinguished any lingering hope of a Grambling upset. Leading 41-26, the Buckeyes unleashed a 15-2 run over a span of just four minutes and twenty seconds, transforming a 15-point lead into an insurmountable 56-28 advantage. The run was a clinic in transition offense and interior scoring, featuring a driving layup from Bruce Thornton, a 3-pointer from John Mobley, a dunk from Devin Royal and a layup from Brandon Noel. Grambling, which had managed just two points on free throws from Antonio Munoz during this stretch, was forced into a timeout at the 15:36 mark, the game’s outcome effectively sealed.
Ohio State’s victory was built on exceptional shooting and individual performances. The Buckeyes connected on 62% of their field goal attempts, including 6 of 18 from 3-point range, and were a sharp 21 of 25 from the free throw line. They scored 89 points on 69 possessions, an offensive rating of 129.2 that underscored their potency.
Amare Bynum, a 6-foot-8 forward from Omaha, Nebraska, anchored the Buckeyes with a near double-double, contributing 12 points and nine rebounds in 31 minutes. The backcourt duo of John Mobley and Bruce Thornton provided the scoring punch. Mobley, a guard from Reynoldsburg, Ohio, led all scorers with 20 points, hitting four 3-pointers and adding four assists. Thornton, from Fairburn, Georgia, chipped in 18 points and four rebounds. The Ohio State frontcourt also made significant contributions, with Christoph Tilly of Berlin, Germany, scoring 10 points and Devin Royal adding 16.
Grambling, which shot just 38.5% from the field, was led by Antonio Munoz. The 6-foot-6 guard from Chicago fought for a team-high 19 points, three rebounds and three steals in 34 minutes. Derrius Ward added 12 points and Jimel Lane provided a spark off the bench with 10 points in just 12 minutes of action. The Tigers won the turnover battle, forcing 14 Ohio State miscues while committing 13, and also tallied nine steals, but were ultimately undone by the Buckeyes’ shooting accuracy and their own offensive struggles, managing an offensive rating of just 91.4.
The game began with both teams struggling to find an offensive rhythm, combining for several early misses and turnovers. Ohio State’s Christoph Tilly finally broke the seal with a layup nearly 90 seconds into the contest. Grambling stayed close through the first media timeout, trailing just 8-6, largely due to active hands on defense. The Tigers’ pressure forced eight first-half turnovers from the Buckeyes, keeping the score relatively tight despite their own shooting woes.
Ohio State began to create separation late in the first period, closing the half on an 8-2 spurt. A Mobley 3-pointer in the final seconds, assisted by Thornton, sent the Buckeyes into the locker room with their largest lead to that point at 15. That momentum carried over explosively after halftime, with Ohio State’s game-defining run putting the contest out of reach for good.
Grambling State, coming off a road win at Hampton, now looks ahead to a home game against Centenary on Dec. 30 before opening Southwestern Athletic Conference play. Ohio State, which was a 26.5-point pregame favorite according to oddsmakers, will begin its Big Ten Conference schedule on the road at Rutgers on Jan. 2. The total points scored, 152, went over the pregame over/under line of 147.5.
