McNeese State Dominates Northwestern State in Southland Conference Opener

LAKE CHARLES, La. (Interstat) — The McNeese State Cowboys delivered a dominant first-half performance and cruised to a 92-54 victory over the Northwestern State Demons in a Southland Conference men’s basketball game Friday night at Burton Coliseum.

A crowd of 3,255 watched the Cowboys improve to 7-2 overall, while the Demons fell to 1-7.

The game was effectively decided in the opening 20 minutes, as McNeese State unleashed a relentless offensive and defensive assault. The Cowboys shot efficiently from the field and forced Northwestern State into a series of early turnovers, converting them into easy transition baskets. A 15-0 run early in the first half set the tone, transforming a narrow 7-5 lead into a commanding 22-5 advantage with just over 14 minutes remaining before halftime.

McNeese State guard Larry Johnson, a sophomore from Savannah, Georgia, was the catalyst. He scored 14 points, dished out six assists and recorded three steals in just 21 minutes, consistently breaking down the Demons’ defense. His backcourt partner, Tyshawn Archie of Houston, added 14 points and three assists. The Cowboys’ depth was on full display, with four players scoring in double figures and nine players recording at least eight points. Garwey Dual and Carl Cherenfant each contributed 12 points.

Northwestern State, struggling to find any offensive rhythm against McNeese State’s pressure, managed only 24 points in the first half on a poor shooting performance. The Demons committed 15 turnovers before the break, which the Cowboys converted into 23 points. By halftime, McNeese State had built an insurmountable 58-24 lead.

The second half saw the Cowboys maintain their intensity, though the scoring pace slowed. Northwestern State showed slightly more offensive cohesion, scoring 30 points after the break, but never threatened to close the gap. The Demons were led by Justin Redmond, a guard from Snellville, Georgia, who scored a team-high 15 points. Chris Mubiru of Philadelphia added 12 points and four assists, and Izzy Miles of Huntsville, Alabama, finished with 14 points and four assists.

McNeese State’s defensive effort was comprehensive, blocking five shots and tallying 13 steals. The Cowboys also controlled the glass, outrebounding Northwestern State and scoring 19 second-chance points. The Demons finished the game with 22 turnovers.

The victory keeps McNeese State near the top of the Southland Conference early in the season, while Northwestern State continues to search for consistency. The Demons have lost seven straight since a season-opening win.

McNeese State travels to face Rhode Island on Tuesday. Northwestern State continues its conference schedule on the road at Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, McNeese State had a 96 percent probability to win. The Cowboys covered the pregame spread of 18.5 points. The total score of 146 went under the over/under line of 141.
