McNeese State Rides Strong First Half to Road Win Over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and opportunistic scoring, the McNeese State Cowboys methodically dismantled the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 69-53 in a Southland Conference men’s basketball matchup Monday afternoon at the American Bank Center.

The most important part of the game was McNeese State’s immediate and sustained defensive intensity, which created a significant first-half cushion the Islanders could never overcome. The Cowboys, forcing turnovers and dominating the interior from the opening tip, built a 40-32 halftime lead and then suffocated the Islanders’ offense after the break, holding them to just 21 second-half points.

McNeese State set the tone early. After a Sheldon Williams free throw put the Islanders on the board, the Cowboys unleashed a decisive 13-2 run. The surge was fueled by interior play and Islanders’ mistakes. Carl Cherenfant scored on a tip-in, Jerrell Colbert added another putback, and Larry Johnson drew fouls and converted at the line. The Cowboys’ defense was equally pivotal, generating turnovers that led to easy baskets. A steal by Cherenfant led directly to a Colbert layup, and the Cowboys consistently capitalized on Corpus Christi’s offensive miscues.

That early run established a pattern for the evening. McNeese State scored 20 points off 15 Islanders turnovers, compared to just 10 points off turnovers for the home team. The Cowboys also owned the painted area, outscoring Corpus Christi 40-26 in the paint, a testament to their physicality and rebounding effort.

Larry Johnson led all scorers with 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds for McNeese State, continuing his strong recent form. Carl Cherenfant provided crucial support with 13 points and seven rebounds. For Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Sheldon Williams worked hard inside for 13 points and eight rebounds, but the Islanders struggled to find consistent offense elsewhere.

The second half offered no respite for the Islanders. McNeese State opened with a 7-2 spurt, capped by a Tyshawn Archie three-pointer, to extend the lead to 47-36. The Cowboys’ defense tightened further, holding Corpus Christi without a field goal for stretches and contesting nearly every shot. McNeese State recorded five blocks in the game, with Peitok Machar contributing three, to stymie the Islanders’ attempts to rally.

Whenever Corpus Christi showed a flicker of momentum, McNeese State had an answer. A Cenker Evran hook shot brought the Islanders within eight points at 40-32 with 15:32 remaining, but the Cowboys responded with six straight points. Johnson scored on a tip-in, and after a steal by DJ Richards, Machar finished inside to push the lead back to 14 and effectively seal the game.

The victory improved McNeese State to 15-4 overall and solidified its position near the top of the Southland Conference. The loss dropped Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to 10-9. The announced attendance was 1,038.

McNeese State, which entered the game as a 7.5-point favorite, covered the spread with ease. The combined score of 122 points fell well under the over/under line of 141.5, underscoring the defensive nature of the contest.

The Cowboys will look to continue their winning ways when they host New Orleans on Saturday. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi aims to rebound on the road at Incarnate Word, also on Saturday.
