San Diego at Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. (Interstat) — The Pacific Tigers will look to avenge a recent road loss and protect their home court when they host the San Diego Toreros in a West Coast Conference men’s basketball matchup Saturday at the A.C. Spanos Center.

Pacific (11-7, 2-2 WCC) enters with a winning record but is coming off a crushing 90-89 overtime loss at Portland on Thursday. The Tigers led by 18 in the second half before the collapse. San Diego (7-10, 2-2) arrives with momentum after an 83-63 home victory over Pepperdine that same night.

The game is a quick rematch of a Dec. 28 contest in San Diego, which the Toreros won 66-54. In that game, San Diego guard Ty-Laur Johnson scored 22 points, while Pacific forward Elias Ralph was held to 11.

Johnson is the focal point for the Toreros, averaging 18.9 points and 5.6 assists per game. He is coming off a 14-point, 10-assist double-double against Pepperdine and has scored 21 or more points in four of his last seven outings. His playmaking will be critical against a Pacific defense seeking redemption.

Ralph leads the Tigers, averaging 17.9 points per game. He logged 42 minutes in the overtime loss to Portland, finishing with 16 points, three assists and two blocks. His scoring versatility will be key as Pacific aims to improve its offensive output after being held to 54 points in the first meeting.

The Tigers have been strong at home this season, including a dominant 84-53 win over Oregon State on Jan. 2. San Diego has struggled on the road, with a 1-7 record away from home, including a 98-70 loss at Santa Clara last Sunday.

Pacific will need to contain Johnson and find consistent scoring beyond Ralph to split the season series. San Diego will rely on Johnson’s backcourt leadership and aim to translate its recent home success into a rare road victory in conference play.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST Saturday.
