Saint John’s Rallies From 16 Down, Edges Georgetown in Big East Thriller
NEW YORK (Interstat) — In a game defined by a staggering reversal of momentum, the Saint John’s Red Storm erased a 15-point halftime deficit with a dominant second-half surge to edge the Georgetown Hoyas 72-69 in a Big East Conference men’s basketball thriller on Tuesday night at a sold-out Carnesecca Arena.
A crowd of 14,319 watched as the Hoyas, who entered with a 13-16 record, executed a near-flawless first half to build a commanding 34-26 lead. Georgetown’s defense stifled the high-powered Red Storm offense, holding the home team to just 26 points on inefficient shooting. Kayvaun Mulready and Jeremiah Williams led the early charge for the Hoyas, combining for 21 first-half points as Georgetown seemed poised for a major upset.
The second half, however, belonged entirely to Saint John’s and its standout forward Zuby Ejiofor. The Red Storm, now 24-6, exploded for 46 points after the break, outscoring Georgetown by 11 in a display of offensive firepower and defensive intensity that had been absent before halftime.
The most important part of the game was unquestionably the opening ten minutes of the second half, where Saint John’s executed a decisive and overwhelming 24-9 run to completely flip the script. The Hoyas’ eight-point lead evaporated in a torrent of Red Storm baskets. Ejiofor, a 6-foot-9, 245-pound force from Garland, Texas, was the catalyst. He scored on dunks, hook shots, and layups, often capitalizing on Georgetown turnovers. His defensive presence, including two blocks, also helped ignite the Saint John’s transition game.
Georgetown, which had been so composed, began to unravel under the relentless pressure. Turnovers by Malik Mack and others were converted into immediate points by the Red Storm. A Dylan Darling steal and assist led to an Ejiofor dunk that tied the game at 30-30 with 18:34 remaining. Just over a minute later, an Oziyah Sellers assist found Ejiofor for a hook shot that gave Saint John’s its first lead since the game’s opening minute at 32-30. The Red Storm never trailed again.
Georgetown showed resilience, fighting to stay within one possession on several occasions. A Mulready 3-pointer with 2:34 left cut the Saint John’s lead to 66-69, and a Malik Mack step-back jumper made it 70-72 with just over a minute to play. The Hoyas had a chance to tie or take the lead in the final seconds, but Caleb Williams’ desperation 3-point attempt as time expired missed, securing the dramatic comeback victory for Saint John’s.
Ejiofor finished as the game’s top performer, logging 32 minutes and pouring in 23 points to go with five assists and two blocks. His interior scoring was the cornerstone of the Red Storm’s second-half revival. Dylan Darling added 12 points and three assists, while Joson Sanon provided a critical spark off the bench with 15 points.
For Georgetown, the loss was a crushing blow in a season filled with narrow defeats. Kayvaun Mulready led all Hoya scorers with 20 points, and Jeremiah Williams contributed 17 points and four assists. Malik Mack tallied 15 points and five assists but was hampered by seven turnovers against the swarming Saint John’s defense.
The victory solidified Saint John’s position near the top of the Big East standings as the regular season winds down, while Georgetown fell to 13-17, continuing a challenging campaign. The Red Storm will look to carry this momentum into their next contest at Seton Hall on Friday. Georgetown returns home to host Providence on Saturday.
