Georgia Topples Alabama in High-Scoring SEC Showdown
ATHENS, Ga. (Interstat) — In a high-stakes Southeastern Conference clash that saw offensive fireworks and a career-defining performance, the Georgia Bulldogs outlasted the Alabama Crimson Tide 98-88 in a men’s college basketball game Tuesday night at a raucous Stegeman Coliseum.
The victory, witnessed by 10,523 fans, improved Georgia’s record to 21-9 overall and delivered a significant boost to its postseason resume. Alabama, which entered the contest on a three-game winning streak, fell to 22-8. The game, which featured 15 lead changes and was tied on 10 occasions, was ultimately decided by a dominant stretch from Georgia’s star forward and Alabama’s inability to find consistent stops against a scorching Bulldogs offense.
The most critical sequence of the game unfolded late in the first half. With Alabama leading 30-28 after a Latrell Wrightsell 3-pointer, Georgia unleashed a devastating 22-5 run over a span of just over four minutes. The catalyst was sophomore Kanon Catchings. The 6-foot-9 forward from Brownsburg, Indiana, transformed the contest, scoring 13 points during the burst. He connected on a stepback jumper, threw down a transition dunk, and buried two deep 3-pointers, the second of which capped the run and gave Georgia a commanding 50-35 lead with just over eight minutes remaining in the half.
Catchings, whose recent performances had been solid but unspectacular, finished with a career-high 32 points, shooting 11 of 19 from the field and 6 of 12 from beyond the arc. His scoring barrage provided the cushion Georgia would rely on for the remainder of the night. Alabama, led by Labaron Philon’s 26 points and Latrell Wrightsell’s 19, never fully recovered from that first-half onslaught, despite a valiant effort to chip away at the deficit.
The Crimson Tide, known for their high-octane offense, were efficient but simply could not match Georgia’s shot-making. The Bulldogs shot a blistering 53% from the field (35 of 66) and 44.8% from 3-point range (13 of 29). Alabama, by contrast, was held to 39.1% shooting (25 of 64), though they stayed in the game by making 16 3-pointers and 22 of 24 free throws. Georgia’s offensive rating of 123.9 points per 100 possessions underscored an exceptional night of execution.
Alabama made several pushes in the second half, cutting a 15-point deficit down to just four on multiple occasions. A driving layup by Aiden Sherrell made it 81-77 with just over five minutes to play, sending a wave of tension through the arena. Each time, however, Georgia had an answer, often from Catchings or point guard Marcus Millender, who orchestrated the offense with 12 points and a game-high six assists.
The Bulldogs’ interior defense, anchored by Somto Cyril and Justin Abson who combined for five blocks, also played a pivotal role. They altered numerous shots at the rim and limited Alabama to only eight offensive rebounds, negating a typical strength of the Crimson Tide.
Despite committing 14 turnovers to Alabama’s nine, Georgia compensated with superior shooting and key plays in clutch moments. After Philon’s three free throws pulled Alabama within 90-87 with 2:47 left, Georgia sealed the game with an 8-1 closing run. Millender hit a crucial stepback 3-pointer, and after a stop, Catchings drilled another three from the wing to extend the lead to 96-88 with just over a minute remaining, effectively extinguishing Alabama’s final hope.
Beyond Catchings, Georgia received balanced contributions. Blue Cain scored 16 points, Kareem Stagg added 10, and Justin Abson provided valuable energy off the bench with seven points and stout interior defense. For Alabama, Aden Holloway scored 15 points and Sherrell added 12, but the defensive intensity that fueled their recent success, including a win at Tennessee, was missing for extended periods.
The result flipped the pregame projections, as Georgia, a slight 2-point favorite, covered the spread and the combined score of 186 surpassed the over/under line of 177.5. Interstat’s ELO system had given Alabama a 70.5% probability to win.
Both teams conclude their regular seasons on Saturday. Georgia travels to face Mississippi State, while Alabama returns home to host rival Auburn, with both seeking momentum heading into the SEC tournament.
