Georgia’s Efficient Offense Overpowers South Carolina in SEC Matchup

ATHENS, Ga. (Interstat) — The Georgia Bulldogs showcased a potent and efficient offensive performance Saturday afternoon, cruising to an 87-68 victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks in a Southeastern Conference men’s basketball game at Stegeman Coliseum.

The Bulldogs, who improved to 20-9 overall and secured a season sweep of the Gamecocks, operated with precision from the opening tip. Georgia scored on its first three possessions, including three-pointers from Kareem Stagg and Kanon Catchings, to establish an early rhythm that South Carolina never managed to disrupt. The Bulldogs shot 56% from the field for the game, connecting on 12 of 30 attempts from beyond the arc, while their defense held the Gamecocks to just 37% shooting.

The most important stretch of the game came late in the first half, as Georgia transformed a competitive contest into a commanding lead. Leading 37-33 with under three minutes remaining before halftime, the Bulldogs closed the period on an 11-2 run. The surge was punctuated by a deep three-pointer from Jeremiah Wilkinson just before the buzzer, giving Georgia a 48-35 advantage at the break. That sequence effectively broke the Gamecocks’ spirit, as South Carolina never cut the deficit to single digits in the second half.

Wilkinson, a guard from Powder Springs, Georgia, led all scorers with 18 points in 27 minutes, adding three assists. His backcourt partner, Marcus Millender of Houston, orchestrated the offense with 10 points and six assists. The Bulldogs’ attack was balanced, with five players scoring in double figures. Somto Cyril, a 6-foot-11 forward from Enugu, Nigeria, dominated the interior with 12 points, two blocks, and several impactful defensive plays, while Stagg contributed 11 points and a block.

South Carolina, which fell to 12-17, was led by guard Meechie Johnson of Cleveland, Ohio, who scored 20 points and dished out four assists in 36 minutes. Kobe Knox of Tampa, Florida, added 12 points, and Eli Ellis of Hickory, North Carolina, also finished with 12. The Gamecocks struggled to generate consistent offense, tallying only five assists as a team against seven turnovers, and found little success from deep, making just 6 of 24 three-point attempts.

Georgia’s defensive presence was a key factor, registering eight blocks and six steals. The Bulldogs also won the possession battle, committing only six turnovers while forcing seven, and limited South Carolina to just four second-chance points despite the Gamecocks grabbing 10 offensive rebounds.

The Bulldogs’ offensive rating of 133.5 on 65 possessions underscored their scoring efficiency, starkly contrasting with South Carolina’s mark of 101.6. Georgia also excelled at the free-throw line, making 11 of 13 attempts, while South Carolina went 18 for 23.

The victory solidifies Georgia’s position as it heads into the final week of the regular season, while South Carolina will look to regroup before its next outing. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Georgia entered the game with an 88.10 percent probability to win and covered the pregame spread of 11 points. The total score of 155 fell under the over/under line of 159.5.

Georgia will next host Alabama on Tuesday, March 3. South Carolina returns home to face Tennessee on the same night.
