Florida Outlasts Kentucky in High-Scoring SEC Showdown

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — In a pivotal Southeastern Conference clash that lived up to its billing, the Florida Gators used a dominant first-half performance and a relentless defensive effort to secure a 92-83 victory over the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday afternoon before a raucous crowd of 11,230 at the O’Connell Center.

The game’s most critical phase unfolded early, as Florida established a tone of defensive pressure and offensive efficiency that Kentucky could never fully overcome. The Gators, capitalizing on a flurry of Wildcat turnovers and missed opportunities, raced out to a double-digit lead in the opening minutes and never trailed. A key 9-0 run midway through the first half, punctuated by a transition dunk from Boogie Fland off a Xaivian Lee steal, pushed Florida’s lead to 32-20 and forced a Kentucky timeout at the 9:24 mark.

Florida’s defense was the catalyst, converting 14 Kentucky turnovers into 25 points, while the Wildcats managed only 12 points off 11 Gator miscues. That 13-point disparity proved decisive in a game where both teams finished with identical 36 points in the paint and similar shooting percentages from the field. Florida’s offensive rating of 120.7 points per 100 possessions starkly outperformed Kentucky’s 106.6, highlighting the Gators’ superior execution in the half-court and in transition, where they held an 11-7 advantage in fastbreak points.

The Gators took a 43-34 lead into halftime, weathering several Kentucky attempts to close the gap. The Wildcats, led by Collin Chandler’s 18 points and Denzel Aberdeen’s 19, fought back valiantly in the second half, cutting the deficit to single digits on multiple occasions. Each time, however, Florida had an answer, often from sophomore guard Urban Klavzar, who came off the bench to pour in 19 points, including five crucial three-pointers that stifled Kentucky momentum.

Kentucky’s final push came late, trimming Florida’s lead to 83-78 after a Chandler three-pointer with 4:48 remaining. But on the ensuing possession, Klavzar delivered the dagger, sinking a deep three-pointer as the shot clock expired to push the lead back to eight and effectively seal the game with just over three minutes left.

Florida was led by a balanced and formidable effort. Xaivian Lee, a guard from Toronto, Canada, scored a game-high 22 points in just 25 minutes, showcasing efficient scoring bursts. The frontcourt duo of Alex Condon and Rueben Chinyelu controlled the interior. Condon, a 6-foot-11 junior from Perth, Australia, recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while the physically imposing Chinyelu, from Enugu, Nigeria, matched him with 10 points and 11 boards. Thomas Haugh added 17 points and eight rebounds for the Gators.

For Kentucky, Aberdeen’s 19 points and four assists paced the offense, with Chandler adding 18. Freshman center Malachi Moreno contributed a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, but the Wildcats’ offense often sputtered against Florida’s active defense, managing only eight total assists against 14 turnovers.

With the win, Florida improved to 19-6 overall and strengthened its position in the SEC race. Kentucky fell to 17-8. The teams are scheduled to meet again in the regular-season finale on March 7 in Lexington.

The victory extended Florida’s winning streak to four games, following impressive conference wins over Georgia, Texas A&M, and Alabama. Kentucky saw a two-game win streak snapped, having previously defeated Oklahoma and Tennessee.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Florida entered the game with an 87% probability to win. The Gators also covered the pregame spread of -11.5. The combined score of 175 points sailed over the over/under line of 152.5.
