Balanced Gators Roll Past Bulldogs in SEC Road Win
ATHENS, Ga. (Interstat) — The Florida Gators delivered a commanding defensive performance and rode a balanced offensive attack to a decisive 86-66 victory over the Georgia Bulldogs in a Southeastern Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at Stegeman Coliseum.
The game was effectively decided in a dominant first half where Florida’s defensive pressure overwhelmed Georgia from the opening tip. The Gators raced out to a 16-point halftime lead, holding the Bulldogs to just 27 points on 10-of-35 shooting from the field before the break. Florida’s disruptive defense forced 10 first-half turnovers, converting them into 12 points, and set a physical tone that Georgia never managed to counter.
The most critical sequence of the game occurred in the opening minutes, establishing Florida’s control. After an initial exchange of turnovers, Florida guard Boogie Fland scored the game’s first four points on a driving layup and a turnaround jumper. Georgia’s offensive struggles were immediately apparent, missing their first five field goal attempts. The Bulldogs’ frustration peaked when Blue Cain’s dunk attempt was emphatically blocked by Florida’s 6-foot-11 forward Alex Condon. On the ensuing possession, Condon found Xaivian Lee for a driving layup, forcing a Georgia timeout just three minutes into the game with the Gators leading 6-0.
That early blockade symbolized the night. Florida’s length and activity in the paint, led by Condon and Rueben Chinyelu, contested nearly every Georgia attempt near the rim. The Bulldogs finished the game shooting just 34.7% from the field and a frigid 27.6% from three-point range. Florida’s offensive rating of 113.0 on 76 possessions starkly outperformed Georgia’s 82.3 on 80 trips, highlighting the efficiency gap created by the Gators’ defense.
While the defense set the table, Florida’s offense was methodical and shared. Xaivian Lee led all scorers with 18 points and added 7 assists, orchestrating the attack. Boogie Fland contributed 15 points, and Alex Condon provided a strong interior presence with 12 points, 2 assists and 2 blocks. Thomas Haugh filled the stat sheet with 11 points, 5 assists and a block. The Gators also received key bench contributions, with Isaiah Brown scoring 12 points and Urban Klavzar adding 8.
Georgia, which never led, was paced by Blue Cain’s 17 points, though he needed 17 shots to get there. Marcus Millender scored 15 points and dished out 5 assists, while Somto Cyril added 10 points and a block. The Bulldogs showed more life in the second half, scoring 39 points, but could never cut the deficit to single digits as Florida answered every run with timely scores.
The Gators improved to 18-6 overall and solidified their position in the SEC standings. Georgia fell to 17-7. Florida has now won two straight in the series after a 92-77 victory in Gainesville earlier this season.
Florida’s defensive intensity from the outset was the defining story. The opening block by Condon and the subsequent 6-0 run set an irreversible tone, proving that the Gators’ physical game plan would govern the night. Georgia’s offense, unable to find rhythm or easy baskets against Florida’s swarming defense, spent the entire game fighting uphill, a battle they were not equipped to win on this night.
The announced attendance was 10,034.
Florida next hosts Kentucky on Saturday. Georgia travels to face Oklahoma, also on Saturday.
