Knights Edge Lakers in Defensive Struggle
HACKENSACK, N.J. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle where points were at a premium, Fairleigh Dickinson edged Mercyhurst 55-52 in a Northeast Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Rothman Center.
The contest, witnessed by 789 fans, was a rematch of a Jan. 2 meeting won by the Knights and featured 15 lead changes and eight ties, with neither team leading by more than seven points. The victory improved Fairleigh Dickinson to 9-16 overall, while Mercyhurst fell to 12-13.
The most critical sequence unfolded in the final 30 seconds with the Knights clinging to a 53-52 lead. After a missed jumper by Mercyhurst’s Bernie Blunt, Fairleigh Dickinson’s Taeshaud Jackson secured the defensive rebound and was fouled with 18 seconds remaining. Jackson, a 6-foot-6 junior from Denver, Colorado, calmly sank both free throws to extend the lead to three.
Mercyhurst had two final opportunities to tie. Out of a timeout, the Lakers’ inbounds play resulted in a heavily contested three-point attempt from Blunt that missed everything with two seconds left. Fairleigh Dickinson’s 7-foot center Cyril Martynov of Barrie, Canada, grabbed the rebound and was fouled. He missed the ensuing free throw, but the Knights secured the offensive board as time expired to seal the narrow victory.
Jackson was the catalyst for Fairleigh Dickinson, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. His late free throws capped a strong all-around performance that included three assists and two steals in 31 minutes. Martynov also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, adding a block and a steal. Point guard Joey Niesman of Oswego, Illinois, played a game-high 40 minutes, contributing eight points and five assists while directing the offense.
Mercyhurst was led by the prolific scoring of guard Bernie Blunt. The 5-11 sophomore from Morgantown, Pennsylvania, poured in a game-high 26 points on 11-of-24 shooting, adding four rebounds. Beyond Blunt, however, the Lakers’ offense struggled significantly. The rest of the team combined for just 26 points on 10-of-42 shooting from the field. Kaden Fuhrmann of Liberty Township, Ohio, provided a spark off the bench with six points.
The game was characterized by frigid shooting and staunch defense. Both teams shot under 37% from the floor and under 25% from three-point range. The Knights held a slight 38-34 advantage in rebounds and forced 12 Mercyhurst turnovers while committing 11 of their own.
Fairleigh Dickinson led 28-30 at halftime after a back-and-forth opening period. The Knights built their largest lead at 41-34 with 14:30 remaining in the second half following a layup by Martynov. Mercyhurst responded with a 13-4 run, capped by a Blunt three-pointer, to take a 47-45 lead with just over seven minutes to play, setting the stage for the tense finish.
The game defied statistical expectations, as Interstat’s ELO system had projected Mercyhurst with a 52.70 percent probability to win. The combined score of 107 points fell well under the over/under line of 130.
Fairleigh Dickinson will host Saint Francis (Pa.) on Thursday. Mercyhurst travels to face Le Moyne on the same night.
