Santa Clara Dominates Loyola Marymount in West Coast Conference Rout

LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive efficiency and defensive pressure, the Santa Clara Broncos delivered a decisive 104-73 victory over the Loyola Marymount Lions in a West Coast Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Gersten Pavilion.

The Broncos, who improved to 19-5 overall, left little doubt from the opening tip, building a 13-point halftime lead and then exploding for 60 points in the second half to turn the contest into a rout. The Lions fell to 11-13.

The most critical phase of the game came early, as Santa Clara established its dominance through a relentless defensive effort that fueled its transition offense. Loyola Marymount committed 20 turnovers, which the Broncos converted into a steady stream of easy scoring opportunities. Santa Clara’s 13 steals were a testament to its active hands and disruptive game plan, directly leading to a significant disparity in shot attempts. The Broncos launched 72 field goals to the Lions’ 48, a direct result of winning the possession battle through forced turnovers and a 15-8 advantage on the offensive glass.

Santa Clara’s offensive execution was clinical, posting an offensive rating of 130.9 points per 100 possessions. The Broncos shot 51.4 percent from the field and connected on 12 three-pointers. They also capitalized at the free-throw line, making 18 of 22 attempts. In contrast, Loyola Marymount struggled to find any offensive rhythm, shooting 43.8 percent overall and a frigid 4 of 17 from beyond the arc. Despite attempting 35 free throws, making 27, the Lions could not keep pace with Santa Clara’s prolific scoring.

The star of the afternoon was Santa Clara guard Brenton Knapper, who rebounded from a series of quieter performances to lead all scorers with 22 points in just 26 minutes. The Charleston, West Virginia, native was a catalyst in the first half, helping the Broncos build their initial cushion, and remained efficient throughout. He was complemented by forward Allen Graves of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, who added 17 points and was a force on the offensive boards.

Santa Clara’s depth was on full display, with four other players scoring in double figures. KJ Cochran of West Chester, Pennsylvania, scored 15 points, while Christian Hammond of Denver and Elijah Mahi of Toronto each contributed 12 points. Mahi also added a block and multiple steals, emblematic of the team’s defensive intensity. Aleksandar Gavalyugov of Sofia, Bulgaria, facilitated the offense with a game-high six assists.

Loyola Marymount was led by Myron Amey of Vacaville, California, who scored 18 points. Joshua Dalton of Concord, North Carolina, provided 14 points and AJ Thomas of Lancaster, California, finished with 11 points and four assists. However, the Lions’ key players were hampered by the team’s collective ball-handling issues, with Amey and primary ball-handlers combining for several of the team’s turnovers.

The game was a repeat of the teams’ meeting just three weeks prior, when Santa Clara secured a 103-72 win at home. This victory extends the Broncos’ winning streak to three games as they continue to solidify their position near the top of the conference standings.

Santa Clara’s next contest is on the road against Pacific on Wednesday. Loyola Marymount will look to regroup quickly, traveling to face San Francisco on Tuesday.

An announced crowd of 1,178 at Gersten Pavilion watched as the Broncos systematically dismantled the Lions, using a formula of defensive pressure, rebounding dominance, and balanced scoring to secure a lopsided conference road win.
