Memphis Dominates Florida Atlantic in Convincing Home Victory

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a stark reversal of fortune from their meeting just over two weeks prior, the Memphis Tigers delivered a commanding and comprehensive 92-65 victory over the Florida Atlantic Owls in an American Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Thursday night at FedExForum.

The game, witnessed by a crowd of 5,074, was defined by Memphis’s stifling defensive pressure and explosive transition offense, which overwhelmed an FAU squad that had won the previous matchup by 11 points. The Tigers improved to 10-10 overall and leveled their conference record, while the Owls fell to 14-8.

The most important part of the game was the Tigers’ relentless defensive intensity from the opening tip, which created a cascade of opportunities and established a tone Florida Atlantic never countered. Memphis forced 23 turnovers, converting them into 27 points, and recorded 14 steals. This defensive havoc directly fueled their offensive efficiency, as they scored 50 points in the paint and 20 fast-break points, consistently beating the Owls down the floor for easy baskets.

Florida Atlantic’s offensive struggles were profound. The Owls shot a frigid 30.8% from the floor, making just 16 of 52 attempts, and connected on only 6 of 22 from three-point range. Despite 14 offensive rebounds leading to extra chances, they managed an offensive rating of just 81.7 points per 100 possessions. Memphis, by contrast, shot 50.7% from the field and posted a robust offensive rating of 113.5.

The Tigers were led by a dominant backcourt performance. Point guard Dug McDaniel, a 5-foot-11 guard from Washington, D.C., orchestrated the onslaught with 23 points and 6 assists in 31 minutes, repeatedly slicing through the FAU defense. His backcourt mate, Sincere Parker of Rockford, Ill., added 21 points, with several key baskets stemming from the Tigers’ defensive plays.

Memphis established control early. After a competitive opening few minutes, a 13-2 run midway through the first half, powered by transition scores and free throws, gave the Tigers a double-digit lead they would not relinquish. They led 41-33 at halftime and then obliterated any hope of an FAU comeback by opening the second half on a 22-9 surge over the first seven minutes. The run featured a steal and layup by McDaniel, a three-pointer from Parker, and interior finishes from 7-foot-1 center Aaron Bradshaw, who finished with 15 points.

Florida Atlantic’s offense was largely limited to isolated efforts. Josiah Parker from Leesburg, Ga., led the Owls with 21 points, while Isaiah Elohim of North Hills, Calif., scored 17 and Amar Amkou of Theis, Senegal, added 14. However, the team’s six total assists against 23 turnovers underscored their inability to generate consistent offense against the Tigers’ pressure.

Memphis also received significant contributions from its bench. Tariq Ingraham of Philadelphia provided a spark with 9 points in just 9 minutes, and the Tigers’ depth was evident as 10 players scored. The Tigers’ ball movement, resulting in 14 assists, and their near-perfect 17-of-19 shooting from the free-throw line stood in stark contrast to FAU’s 27-of-39 performance from the line.

The victory marked a significant bounce-back for Memphis, which had lost three of its last four games, and served as emphatic payback for the 89-78 loss in Boca Raton on Jan. 11. For Florida Atlantic, the lopsided defeat halted the momentum from a solid start to conference play and highlighted vulnerabilities that Memphis exploited mercilessly.

According to pregame analytics from Interstat, Memphis had a 70.3% probability to win and was installed as a 1-point favorite. The combined score of 157 points went under the betting over/under line of 151.

Florida Atlantic will look to regroup when it hosts East Carolina on Sunday. Memphis continues its homestand, also on Sunday, against Tulane.
