Saint Mary’s Holds Off Portland in Tight West Coast Conference Road Win

PORTLAND, Ore. (Interstat) — In a West Coast Conference men’s basketball game defined by offensive execution and a pivotal individual duel, Saint Mary’s held off a persistent Portland team for a 75-69 victory at Chiles Center on Saturday.

The Gaels, who led wire-to-wire after scoring the game’s first five points, improved to 19-3 overall and 6-1 in conference play. Portland fell to 10-12 and 2-5.

The contest’s central narrative was the high-scoring battle between Saint Mary’s forward Paulius Murauskas and Portland guard Joel Foxwell. Murauskas, a 6-foot-8 sophomore from Kaunas, Lithuania, led all scorers with 24 points on 8-of-16 shooting, adding nine rebounds. Foxwell, a 6-1 guard from Melbourne, Australia, kept the Pilots within striking distance with a game-high 27 points, including three 3-pointers, and dished out five assists.

Despite Foxwell’s efforts, Saint Mary’s maintained control through superior efficiency. The Gaels shot 45.5% from the field and a sharp 42.9% from beyond the arc, compared to Portland’s 43.6% and 35.3%, respectively. A critical disparity came at the free-throw line, where Saint Mary’s converted 16 of 18 attempts, while Portland was nearly as efficient but had fewer opportunities, making 15 of 17.

Saint Mary’s built a 38-34 halftime lead behind 12 points from Murauskas and 10 from guard Mikey Lewis. Portland stayed close as Foxwell scored 13 before the break, including a deep 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer to cut the deficit to four.

The second half saw the Pilots repeatedly threaten but never overtake the Gaels. Each time Portland closed the gap, Saint Mary’s answered. A driving layup by Foxwell brought the Pilots to 58-56 with just over seven minutes remaining, marking the closest they had been since the opening minutes. The Gaels responded with a 7-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Dillan Shaw, to push the lead back to seven.

Portland’s James O’Donnell, a 6-10 forward from Sydney, Australia, provided a strong interior presence with 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting. However, Saint Mary’s countered with balance. Lewis finished with 15 points, Joshua Dent of Wollongong, Australia, added 13 points and a game-high seven assists, and Shaw contributed eight points off the bench.

The Pilots’ comeback attempts were hampered by ball security issues, committing nine turnovers against only seven assists. Saint Mary’s, while also careless with 12 turnovers, generated just enough offense from its sets, finishing with an offensive rating of 112.7 points per 100 possessions, outperforming Portland’s 104.4.

Defensively, Saint Mary’s protected the rim effectively with four blocks, two each from centers Harry Wessels and Andrew McKeever, and limited Portland to six offensive rebounds. The Pilots’ Cameron Williams finished with 10 points and three blocks.

The most important sequence of the game occurred in the final 90 seconds. After a 3-pointer by Portland’s Garrett Nuckolls cut the Saint Mary’s lead to 69-66, the Gaels ran the shot clock down on the ensuing possession. With the defense stretched, Murauskas found Shaw open in the corner, and the sophomore forward drained a clutch 3-pointer with 15 seconds left, extending the lead to six and effectively sealing the victory.

Portland could not get a clean look on its final possession, and Dent iced the game with two free throws for the final margin.

The announced attendance was 1,679. Saint Mary’s next travels to face Gonzaga on Jan. 31, while Portland visits Pacific on Jan. 28.
