Williams Lifts Arkansas-Pine Bluff to Narrow Win Over Southern

BATON ROUGE, La. (Interstat) — In a game defined by its final, frantic seconds, Quion Williams delivered a dagger that defied the odds. The Arkansas-Pine Bluff guard sank a pull-up jumper with 13 seconds remaining to lift the Golden Lions to a stunning 75-74 victory over Southern on Saturday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference thriller at the Clark Activity Center.

The win, secured before a crowd of 3,652, snapped a three-game losing streak for Arkansas-Pine Bluff and handed the Jaguars a heartbreaking defeat in a contest they statistically controlled for long stretches. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Southern with a 93% probability to win.

The game’s climax was set up by a dramatic sequence in the final minute. After Southern’ Ashton Magee tied the game at 74 by making one of two free throws with 49 seconds left, Arkansas-Pine Bluff called a timeout to set up a final play. The Golden Lions worked the clock down before Williams, isolated at the top of the key, created just enough space to launch a contested 18-footer that swished through the net.

Southern had two timeouts but opted to play on, rushing the ball upcourt. Fazl Oshodi’s potential game-winning 3-point attempt from the right wing as time expired missed everything, and the Golden Lions secured the defensive rebound as the buzzer sounded.

The final play capped a remarkable performance by Williams, a 6-foot-5 guard from Jonesboro, Arkansas. He finished with a game-high 23 points, including the final four for his team, to go with four assists. His backcourt mate, Trevon Payton of Snellville, Georgia, was equally vital, pouring in 22 points, with six of his eight field goals coming from beyond the arc.

Southern was led by a superb double-double from point guard Michael Jacobs of Atlanta, who tallied 15 points and 11 assists, orchestrating an offense that posted a slightly higher efficiency rating (109.9) than Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s (108.2). Oshodi, from Swedesboro, New Jersey, added 17 points, all but two coming from 3-point range, while center Malek Abdelgowad of Cairo, Egypt, controlled the paint with 16 points and a game-high four offensive rebounds.

The game was a tale of contrasting strengths. Southern dominated inside, outscoring Arkansas-Pine Bluff 32-24 in the paint and grabbing 13 offensive rebounds to the Golden Lions’ six. The Jaguars also forced 11 turnovers, converting them into 16 points, and held a 9-3 edge in fastbreak points.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff, however, found its advantage from the perimeter. The Golden Lions shot 9 for 24 from 3-point range, a 37.5% clip, while Southern struggled mightily from deep, connecting on just 6 of 27 attempts (22.2%). That 18-point disparity from beyond the arc ultimately proved decisive in a one-point game.

The contest was tightly contested throughout, featuring 10 ties and 11 lead changes. The first half ended deadlocked at 31, and the second half saw neither team lead by more than six points. Southern appeared to seize momentum midway through the final period, using a 10-2 run to take a 58-52 lead with just over nine minutes to play, fueled by Oshodi’s deep shooting and Jacobs’ playmaking.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff responded with resilience, chipping away behind the shot-making of Payton and Williams. A critical sequence occurred with just over eight minutes left when Abdelgowad was assessed a flagrant foul on Payton, who made both free throws to keep the Golden Lions within striking distance.

Jaquan Scott of Dallas provided crucial interior support for the visitors with 14 points, while Milhan Charles of Bristol, Connecticut, added six points and key defensive plays, including a block in the final minutes.

For Southern, AJ Barnes of Atlanta scored 10 points, and DaMariee Jones of Bessemer, Alabama, also added 10 points and two blocks, but the Jaguars could not overcome their cold outside shooting at the most inopportune time.

The victory improves Arkansas-Pine Bluff to 7-13 overall and evens its SWAC record, while Southern falls to 7-12. The Golden Lions will look to build on the road win when they travel to face Mississippi Valley State on Jan. 31. Southern must regroup quickly, hosting Mississippi Valley State on Monday night.
