Morehead State Holds Off Western Illinois in OVC Contest

HALDEMAN, Ky. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a staggering rebounding disparity and a late defensive stand, the Morehead State Eagles held off a persistent Western Illinois Leathernecks squad 71-66 in an Ohio Valley Conference men’s basketball game Thursday night at E.T. Johnson Arena.

Despite a game-high 26 points from Western Illinois guard Lucas Lorenzen, the Eagles leveraged a dominant 21-6 advantage in offensive rebounds into a crucial edge in second-chance opportunities to secure the victory in front of 1,234 fans. The win pushed Morehead State to an even 10-10 overall record, while Western Illinois fell to 4-16.

The most pivotal sequence of the contest unfolded in the final 35 seconds with Morehead State clinging to a 66-63 lead. Western Illinois, after a timeout, ran a play for Lorenzen, whose driving layup attempt was emphatically blocked by Morehead State’s Davion Cunningham. The Eagles secured the loose ball, and Cunningham was fouled. He sank both free throws with six seconds remaining to extend the lead to five points, effectively sealing the outcome.

Cunningham, a guard from Charlotte, North Carolina, was instrumental in the Eagles’ victory, finishing with 18 points, including the decisive free throws, along with a key block and two steals. His backcourt mate, George Marshall, added 10 points, four rebounds and two blocks, providing crucial defensive resistance.

The Leathernecks, who have now lost six straight, were plagued by inefficiency at the free-throw line, converting just six of 13 attempts. This proved costly in a tight game where Morehead State, though not much better at 10 of 20 from the line, capitalized on extra possessions. The Eagles’ 21 offensive rebounds contributed heavily to their 110.1 offensive rating on 64 possessions, compared to Western Illinois’s 96.8 rating on 68 trips.

Morehead State built its lead in the first half, taking a 39-32 advantage into the break behind balanced scoring. The Eagles’ interior presence, led by Tamaury Releford’s 12 points and Anouar Mellouk’s 11, allowed them to score 46 points in the paint despite making only three of 16 attempts from three-point range.

Western Illinois, which shot a respectable 10 of 24 from beyond the arc, refused to fade. Lorenzen, a 6-foot-4 guard from Milford, Iowa, ignited several rallies, including a personal 8-0 run early in the second half that trimmed a nine-point deficit to one. Francis Okwuosah supported him with 13 points, but the Leathernecks’ offense often stagnated, resulting in only five team assists.

Each time Western Illinois drew close, Morehead State answered, often via an offensive board and putback. The Eagles finished with a 46-33 overall rebounding margin. A Releford layup with 2:11 to play gave Morehead State a 65-60 cushion, setting the stage for the tense final minute and Cunningham’s game-sealing plays.

The game’s result defied the pregame spread, which had Morehead State favored by nine points, but the total score of 137 fell under the over/under line of 138.5. National statistical models had given the Eagles an 84.4% probability of victory.

Both teams return to OVC action on Saturday. Morehead State will host Eastern Illinois, while Western Illinois travels to face Southern Indiana.
