Portland Pilots Dominate First Half, Cruise Past Loyola Marymount Lions
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — The Portland Pilots constructed a massive first-half lead with stifling defense and held off a late push to defeat the Loyola Marymount Lions 71-58 in a West Coast Conference men’s basketball game Saturday night at Gersten Pavilion.
Portland, which entered the game with a projected win probability of just 18.6 percent according to Interstat’s ELO system, improved to 10-11 overall. Loyola Marymount fell to 11-10.
The most critical phase of the game was its opening 20 minutes, where Portland’s defensive intensity completely overwhelmed the Lions. The Pilots held Loyola Marymount to just 21 first-half points on 7-of-28 shooting from the field. The Lions committed nine turnovers against only a single assist, struggling to find any offensive rhythm against an active Portland scheme that generated six steals and two blocks in the half.
Portland’s offense, while not spectacular, was efficient enough to build a commanding 39-21 halftime advantage. The Pilots shot 46.7% from the field in the period and capitalized on the Lions’ mistakes, scoring 10 points off turnovers.
Loyola Marymount star Jalen Shelley, who finished with a team-high 19 points, opened the game’s scoring with a 3-pointer just 90 seconds in. That would prove to be the Lions’ only lead. Portland responded with a 7-0 run and continued to extend its margin, using a balanced attack. Five Pilots scored between seven and 12 points in the first half, led by James O’Donnell’s 11 and Mikah Ballew’s 10.
The Lions showed life after halftime, opening the second period on a 12-4 run to cut the deficit to 43-33 with 16:32 remaining, fueled by five quick points from Rokas Jocius. Portland’s Joel Foxwell answered with a crucial 3-pointer to stem the tide. Loyola Marymount continued to chip away, pulling within nine points on several occasions, but could never mount a sustained run to truly threaten the Pilots.
Every time the Lions drew close, Portland found a response. When a Rodney Brown 3-pointer made it 52-43 with 8:41 left, Garrett Nuckolls hit a stepback jumper on the ensuing possession. After a Shelley layup cut it to 58-49 with 2:37 to go, Foxwell connected on a difficult stepback to push the lead back to 11 and effectively seal the game.
Portland’s victory was rooted in defensive execution and ball security. The Pilots committed only 11 turnovers while forcing 15 from Loyola Marymount. The Lions managed just two assists for the entire game, a stark indicator of Portland’s disruptive defense. The Pilots also won the efficiency battle, posting an offensive rating of 102.2 points per 100 possessions compared to Loyola Marymount’s 79.9.
Foxwell, a guard from Melbourne, Australia, led all scorers with 18 points and added five assists in 39 minutes. Ballew, from Palmdale, California, contributed 17 points, including three 3-pointers. Nuckolls added 12 points and O’Donnell finished with 11. Matus Hronsky provided valuable energy off the bench with seven points.
For Loyola Marymount, Shelley’s 19 points came on 7-of-15 shooting. Brown added 10 points, and Jocius provided a second-half spark to finish with nine points and seven rebounds. The Lions shot just 31.6% from the field for the game and 28.6% from beyond the arc.
The win gives Portland momentum heading into a key conference homestand, while Loyola Marymount must regroup quickly as both teams continue their WCC schedules next week.
