Southern Dominates Grambling in SWAC Road Victory

GRAMBLING, La. (Interstat) — A dominant defensive performance and a decisive early run propelled the Southern Jaguars to a convincing 71-53 victory over the Grambling Tigers in a Southwestern Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Saturday night at a packed Fredrick Hobdy Assembly Center.

The most important part of the game unfolded in the opening minutes, as Southern established a commanding lead from which Grambling never recovered. The Jaguars’ swarming, aggressive defense set the tone immediately, forcing the Tigers into a series of rushed shots and costly turnovers. Grambling’s offensive struggles were profound and persistent; they managed only two field goals in the game’s first nine minutes and shot a frigid 31.8 percent from the floor for the game. Southern capitalized on every miscue, turning 21 Grambling turnovers into 29 points and building a 24-10 advantage in fastbreak points.

Southern’s backcourt duo of Michael Jacobs and Fazl Oshodi orchestrated the victory. Jacobs, a junior from Atlanta, played a masterful floor game, directing the offense for 37 minutes and finishing with 14 points and nine assists. Oshodi, a guard from Swedesboro, New Jersey, provided a critical scoring punch with a team-high 16 points, including four three-pointers that helped stretch the Grambling defense.

The Jaguars’ interior presence was equally impactful. Terrance Dixon, a 6-foot-8 forward from Lawrenceville, Georgia, contributed 10 points and two blocks, while DaMariee Jones of Bessemer, Alabama, anchored the paint with three blocks and relentless rebounding. Their efforts limited Grambling to just 22 points in the paint and a paltry three successful three-pointers on 16 attempts.

Grambling, which entered the contest with a slight edge in the season standings and was a narrow favorite according to predictive metrics, never found an offensive rhythm. The Tigers were led by Derrius Ward’s 11 points and 10-point efforts from both Jamil Muttilib and Jimel Lane. However, the team’s 75.5 offensive rating on 70 possessions underscored a night of inefficiency. Despite attempting 10 more free throws than Southern, making 22, they could not overcome their catastrophic shooting performance from the field.

Southern took a 34-22 lead into halftime and methodically extended it throughout the second half, with the margin never dipping below double digits. The Jaguars’ ball movement, evidenced by 16 assists on 25 made field goals, consistently generated quality looks and highlighted the disparity in offensive execution between the two teams.

The victory improved Southern’s record to 7-11 overall, while Grambling fell to 8-10. Both teams now look ahead to their next SWAC contests on Jan. 24, with Southern hosting Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Grambling welcoming Mississippi Valley State. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Baton Rouge on Feb. 21.
