Middle Tennessee Outlasts Missouri State in Double-Overtime Thriller

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a game defined by clutch shots, defensive stands, and sheer endurance, Torey Alston and Kamari Lands propelled Middle Tennessee to a 90-87 double-overtime victory over Missouri State in a Conference USA men’s basketball thriller Saturday night at Murphy Athletics Center.

The contest, witnessed by 4,482 fans, saw the Blue Raiders survive a furious Bears rally in regulation and withstand multiple potential game-winning attempts across two extra periods before finally securing the win.

The most critical sequence of the night unfolded in the final seconds of the second overtime. With Middle Tennessee clinging to a one-point lead, Missouri State’s Keith Palek missed a contested jump shot with eight seconds remaining. The Blue Raiders’ Jahvin Carter secured the defensive rebound and was immediately fouled. The sophomore guard from Alcoa, Tennessee, then calmly sank two free throws with eight seconds on the clock to extend the lead to three.

Missouri State had one final chance to force a third overtime, but Trey Williams Jr.’s desperation three-pointer from the wing as time expired missed the mark, allowing Middle Tennessee to escape.

The game was a statistical anomaly defined by contrasting styles. Middle Tennessee’s efficiency proved decisive. The Blue Raiders shot a scorching 52.7% from the field and an even more impressive 50% from three-point range, connecting on 14 of 28 attempts. They also converted 18 of 23 free throws. Missouri State, by contrast, was more prolific but less precise, attempting 14 more field goals but making one fewer. The Bears shot 43.5% overall and a respectable 44% from deep, but were hampered by 16 missed free throws, going 16 of 26 from the line.

Defensively, Middle Tennessee protected the rim with authority, recording 10 blocked shots, led by three each from Alston and Lands. Missouri State countered with aggressive perimeter defense, forcing 15 turnovers and registering 10 steals.

Alston, a 6-foot-8 forward from Durham, North Carolina, was the engine for the Blue Raiders, playing 42 minutes and finishing with 22 points, three assists and three blocks. His partner, Kamari Lands of Indianapolis, matched his minute load and contributed 21 points, including five three-pointers, along with three blocks.

Missouri State was led by a balanced offensive effort. Keith Palek, a 6-foot-8 forward from Woodbine, New Jersey, posted 20 points and seven assists in 42 minutes. Michael Osei-Bonsu, a powerful 6-foot-4 guard from Bolingbrook, Illinois, added 20 points and seven rebounds before fouling out. Kobi Williams of St. Louis chipped in 19 points, while Zaxton King scored 11.

The game appeared to be slipping away from Middle Tennessee in the final minute of regulation. After leading for much of the second half, the Blue Raiders found themselves in a 68-68 tie. Missouri State had a chance to win it at the buzzer, but Osei-Bonsu’s driving layup attempt rolled off the rim, sending the game to overtime.

The first overtime was a tense, back-and-forth affair where both teams scored 10 points. Missouri State’s Trey Williams Jr. hit a critical three-pointer with under two minutes left to tie the game at 78. Middle Tennessee had the final possession, but Lands’ three-point attempt at the horn was off target, necessitating a second extra period.

In the second overtime, Middle Tennessee’s precision from distance resurfaced. With the score tied at 83, Lands drilled his fifth three-pointer of the night off an assist from Carter to give the Blue Raiders an 88-85 lead with 1:34 remaining. Missouri State’s Antwan Burnett answered with a three of his own 30 seconds later to knot the score at 88.

On the ensuing possession, Middle Tennessee worked the clock before a shot clock violation gave the ball back to Missouri State with 29 seconds left. The Bears called timeout to set up a play, but Palek’s mid-range jumper was off the mark, setting the stage for Carter’s game-sealing free throws.

With the win, Middle Tennessee improves to 11-7 overall. Missouri State falls to 10-8. The Blue Raiders, who were projected as heavy favorites by advanced metrics pregame, next travel to face Jacksonville State on Jan. 24. The Bears continue their road swing with a visit to New Mexico State on Jan. 22.
