Florida Pulls Away From Georgia in Second Half for SEC Win

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — The Florida Gators used a dominant second-half performance fueled by a stifling defense and a career night from forward Thomas Haugh to pull away from the Georgia Bulldogs for a 92-77 victory in a Southeastern Conference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at a sold-out O’Connell Center.

A tightly contested first half gave way to a Florida onslaught after halftime, as the Gators outscored the Bulldogs 51-37 in the final 20 minutes to turn a one-point halftime lead into a comfortable 15-point win. The victory improved Florida to 10-5 overall and 1-1 in the SEC, while handing Georgia, which entered the game with a 13-1 record, its second loss of the season.

The most critical phase of the game occurred in the opening minutes of the second half. Leading just 41-40 at the break, Florida came out of the locker room with intensified defensive pressure. The Gators forced Georgia into a series of rushed shots and costly turnovers, sparking a decisive 16-7 run over the first six minutes. The surge was capped by a transition dunk from Alex Condon, assisted by Boogie Fland, that pushed Florida’s lead to 57-47 and forced a Georgia timeout. The Bulldogs never recovered, as their shooting struggles persisted and Florida continued to control the paint and the glass.

Haugh, a 6-foot-9 sophomore from New Oxford, Pennsylvania, was the catalyst for Florida, delivering a complete performance with 21 points, five assists and four blocks in 36 minutes. He was efficient from the field and a disruptive force defensively, anchoring a Gator front line that recorded 10 blocks and limited Georgia’s interior scoring. Condon, a 6-11 sophomore from Perth, Australia, matched Haugh’s scoring output with 21 points of his own, adding two blocks. The Gators’ interior dominance was further evidenced by a 20-10 advantage in offensive rebounds, leading to 20 second-chance points.

Georgia, which entered the contest averaging over 97 points per game, was held to a season-low 77 points on 41.4% shooting. The Bulldogs were particularly cold from beyond the arc, making just 4 of 19 three-point attempts. Marcus Millender led Georgia with 18 points, while Dylan James added 16 and Jordan Ross contributed 13. The Bulldogs’ offensive rhythm was consistently disrupted by Florida’s length and activity, resulting in a season-low six assists against nine turnovers.

The game was a tale of two halves statistically. While the first half featured 10 lead changes and neither team leading by more than five points, Florida seized control after halftime. The Gators shot 51.4% from the field in the second half and capitalized on their possessions, posting an offensive rating of 119.6 for the game compared to Georgia’s 96.3. Florida’s defense held Georgia to just 37 second-half points, a key factor in covering the pregame spread where the Gators were installed as 7.5-point favorites.

The announced attendance of 9,563 saw Florida bounce back from a narrow road loss at Missouri last Saturday. Georgia, coming off an overtime win against Auburn, saw its six-game winning streak snapped. The Bulldogs will look to regroup on the road at South Carolina this Saturday. Florida, meanwhile, faces a quick turnaround with a home matchup against Tennessee on Saturday. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Athens on February 11.
