Santa Clara Broncos Dominate San Diego Toreros in West Coast Conference Matchup

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Interstat) — The Santa Clara Broncos turned a dominant performance on the glass and a relentless defensive effort into a commanding 98-70 victory over the San Diego Toreros in a West Coast Conference men’s basketball game Sunday at a sparsely attended Leavey Center.

From the opening tip, the Broncos established a physical and efficient brand of basketball that the Toreros could not match. Santa Clara’s superiority was most evident in its work on the offensive boards, where it secured 19 rebounds leading to a cascade of second-chance points that steadily demoralized the San Diego defense. The Broncos’ 19 offensive rebounds nearly tripled the Toreros’ total of seven, creating a significant disparity in shot opportunities and possession time.

The game’s decisive stretch came early, as Santa Clara capitalized on San Diego’s mistakes to build an insurmountable lead. After the Toreros’ Vuk Boskovic turned the ball over less than three minutes into the contest, Santa Clara’s Brenton Knapper converted a layup for the game’s first points. On the ensuing San Diego possession, a missed jumper led to a Christian Hammond three-pointer, and another Boskovic turnover seconds later resulted in an Elijah Mahi layup. In a blink, a 7-0 Santa Clara run established a tone of defensive pressure and transition offense from which San Diego never recovered.

The Broncos steadily expanded their lead throughout the first half, leveraging their size and activity. Allen Graves and Thierry Darlan provided crucial energy off the bench, with Graves scoring on multiple tip-ins and Darlan stretching the floor. A key sequence with just over 12 minutes left in the half saw Santa Clara block a San Diego layup, secure the defensive rebound, and immediately find Jake Ensminger for a three-pointer, pushing the lead to 19-9 and forcing a San Diego timeout. The Broncos closed the half on a 7-2 mini-run, capped by a Bukky Oboye dunk off a Mahi assist, to take a 45-32 advantage into the break.

Any notion of a San Diego comeback was quickly extinguished in the second half. The Toreros scored the first five points after halftime to close within eight, but Santa Clara responded with a 15-4 run over the next four minutes. The spurt was fueled by the same formula: defensive stops, transition baskets, and offensive rebounds. Darlan hit a pair of three-pointers during the run, and Hammond continued his efficient scoring inside, ballooning the lead to 60-41 and effectively putting the game out of reach.

San Diego guard Ty-Laur Johnson provided a bright spot for the visitors, scoring 21 points and dishing out seven assists in 30 minutes of action. Boskovic added 11 points for the Toreros. Their efforts, however, were overwhelmed by a balanced and deep Santa Clara attack. Hammond matched Johnson’s 21 points to lead the Broncos, while Darlan finished with 14 points, Graves added 12 points, and Ensminger chipped in nine points and five assists. Mahi orchestrated the offense masterfully, tallying nine assists to go with seven points and seven rebounds.

The statistical ledger told the story of Santa Clara’s comprehensive victory. The Broncos shot 50% from the field (37 of 74) and were a perfect 10 for 10 from the free-throw line. Their defense forced 16 San Diego turnovers, converting them into 13 steals. Perhaps most telling was the efficiency rating; Santa Clara scored 132.9 points per 100 possessions, a mark of elite offensive execution, while San Diego managed just 93.1.

The win improves Santa Clara’s record to 13-4 overall and 2-0 in WCC play, continuing a strong start to conference action. The loss drops San Diego to 6-10 overall and 0-2 in the league, extending a difficult stretch that has seen the Toreros lose three of their last four games.

Santa Clara next travels to face Gonzaga on Thursday in a key early conference showdown. San Diego returns home to host Pepperdine on the same night, seeking its first WCC victory of the season.
