Vanderbilt Remains Unbeaten With Road Win Over South Carolina
COLUMBIA, S.C. (Interstat) — The Vanderbilt Commodores, one of the nation’s last remaining undefeated teams, passed their first true Southeastern Conference test with a blend of offensive firepower and defensive resilience, defeating the South Carolina Gamecocks 83-71 on Saturday at Colonial Life Arena.
In a game defined by Vanderbilt’s surgical offensive execution and South Carolina’s persistent but ultimately futile attempts to close the gap, the Commodores improved to 14-0 overall and 1-0 in the SEC. South Carolina fell to 9-5 and 0-1.
The most important part of the game was Vanderbilt’s immediate and commanding response to every South Carolina rally. The Commodores never trailed, building a 42-34 halftime lead and then systematically extinguishing any Gamecock momentum in the second half. Each time South Carolina trimmed the deficit to single digits, Vanderbilt answered with a critical basket, often orchestrated by point guard Tyler Tanner, to restore a double-figure cushion and silence the crowd of 9,760.
Tanner, a sophomore from Brentwood, Tennessee, was the maestro of Vanderbilt’s offensive orchestra. He finished with 19 points and a staggering 14 assists, controlling the tempo and consistently breaking down the South Carolina defense. His playmaking was the engine behind Vanderbilt’s efficient offensive rating of 128.6 points per 100 possessions.
Vanderbilt’s offensive balance proved overwhelming. AK Okereke, a 6-foot-7 forward from Clovis, California, scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds. Tyler Nickel added 16 points, and Devin McGlockton contributed 15. The Commodores shot 50.9% from the field and a sharp 43.5% from three-point range, making 10 of 23 attempts. They also capitalized at the free-throw line, hitting 15 of 18.
South Carolina, meanwhile, struggled to find consistent offense outside of the paint. The Gamecocks shot just 25% from beyond the arc, making only 7 of 28 attempts. Elijah Strong led South Carolina with 17 points, while Myles Stute added 14 points and six rebounds. Mike Sharavjamts scored 13, and Meechie Johnson dished out six assists but was held to nine points on 2-of-9 shooting.
The Gamecocks’ effort was evident, as they committed only four turnovers and won the steals battle 4-2. However, they could not overcome Vanderbilt’s superior shot-making and playmaking, evidenced by the Commodores’ 14-assist performance against just two turnovers for the team, a remarkable ratio.
Vanderbilt established control early, using a 9-0 run to build a 20-8 lead midway through the first half. South Carolina chipped away, closing to within 30-26 after a three-pointer from Stute, but the Commodores closed the half on a 12-8 spurt to take an eight-point lead into the break.
The pattern repeated in the second half. A driving layup by Strong brought South Carolina within 47-41 with 15:31 remaining, but Tanner immediately found Nickel for a three-pointer on the ensuing possession. Minutes later, when Strong converted a three-point play to make it 54-50, Vanderbilt responded with a 7-0 run, capped by a Tanner-assisted alley-oop to McGlockton, pushing the lead back to 11.
South Carolina’s last meaningful push came when Eli Ellis scored in transition to cut the deficit to 64-58 with just over seven minutes left. Once again, Vanderbilt had the answer, as Tanner found Jalen Washington for an easy layup, and after a South Carolina miss, Tanner fed McGlockton for a jumper to extend the lead back to 10 with 5:17 to play. The Gamecocks would not get closer than nine points the rest of the way.
Vanderbilt’s defense, which blocked three shots, also keyed the victory by forcing South Carolina into difficult perimeter shots. The Commodores also won the rebounding battle 36-30, including eight offensive boards that led to 12 second-chance points.
The victory extended Vanderbilt’s perfect start, a run that includes non-conference wins over Wake Forest and Memphis. South Carolina, which had won three straight entering SEC play, looks to rebound quickly as it heads to LSU on Tuesday.
Vanderbilt will host LSU next Saturday, aiming to continue its unbeaten march through a challenging SEC schedule. Based on the pregame spread, Vanderbilt covered as a 14.5-point favorite. The total score of 154 fell just under the over/under line of 155.5.
