Tommies’ Hot Shooting Buries Bison in Summit League Showdown
SAINT PAUL, Minn. (Interstat) — In a pivotal late-season Summit League clash with significant conference tournament seeding implications, the Saint Thomas Tommies delivered a commanding statement, avenging an earlier loss with a decisive 84-62 victory over the North Dakota State Bison on Thursday night.
Playing before a raucous home crowd of 4,708 at Schoenecker Arena, the Tommies (22-8, 12-5 Summit) seized control from the opening tip and never relented, using a blistering first-half offensive display to build an insurmountable lead. The win, fueled by a combined 42 points from Nick Janowski and Carter Bjerke, snapped a five-game winning streak for the Bison (23-7, 13-4) and tightened the race atop the conference standings.
The most critical phase of the game unfolded in the opening ten minutes. After a competitive start that saw the score tied at 8-8, Saint Thomas unleashed a devastating 26-4 run that effectively decided the contest before the midpoint of the first half. The surge was a showcase of offensive efficiency and defensive intensity. Carter Bjerke, the 6-foot-9 forward from Plymouth, Minnesota, ignited the run with a trio of three-pointers, demonstrating his range and stretching the North Dakota State defense. Simultaneously, guard Nolan Minessale of Brookfield, Wisconsin, orchestrated the offense with precision, dishing out multiple assists during the stretch and applying relentless ball pressure that forced several Bison turnovers.
North Dakota State, which entered the game allowing just 66.8 points per contest, had no answer for the Tommies’ multifaceted attack. The Bison offense, typically methodical and efficient, was rushed and out of sync, committing uncharacteristic turnovers that Saint Thomas converted into easy transition opportunities. By the time the run concluded, the Tommies held a 34-12 advantage, and the Bison were left scrambling.
Saint Thomas took a commanding 50-27 lead into halftime, having shot a scorching percentage from the field while holding North Dakota State to just 27 points on 35% shooting in the period. The Bison’s leading scorer, Damari Wheeler-Thomas, was harassed into a difficult night, finishing with 11 points on 4-of-14 shooting.
The second half offered no reprieve for the visitors. Every attempt by North Dakota State to mount a comeback was swiftly countered. When the Bison trimmed the deficit to 19 points early in the period, Janowski answered with a driving layup and a deep step-back three-pointer to push the lead back to 24. The Tommies’ lead ballooned to as many as 26 points, allowing head coach Johnny Tauer to empty his bench in the final minutes.
Janowski, a 6-foot-4 guard from Pewaukee, Wisconsin, led all scorers with 21 points, adding four assists and two blocks. Bjerke matched his 21-point output, going 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. Minessale filled the stat sheet with 17 points and a game-high six assists, serving as the steadying force for the Tommies’ offense throughout.
For North Dakota State, the interior presence of Noah Feddersen provided a rare bright spot. The 6-foot-10 forward from Menomonie, Wisconsin, scored 13 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Treyson Anderson added 11 points, but the Bison’s backcourt of Wheeler-Thomas and Andy Stefonowicz combined for just 17 points on 6-of-22 shooting.
The victory was a measure of revenge for Saint Thomas, which suffered a narrow 68-65 defeat in Fargo on Jan. 17. It also marked a significant rebound from a road loss at Denver just five days prior. According to the Interstat ELO system, Saint Thomas was projected with a 55.3% probability to win, a forecast they exceeded with a dominant performance.
The result sets up a compelling final weekend of the regular season. North Dakota State, now just one game ahead of Saint Thomas in the loss column, will look to regroup quickly as they host North Dakota on Saturday. The Tommies, riding a wave of momentum, will welcome Omaha to Schoenecker Arena on the same day, with a chance to potentially improve their seeding for the upcoming Summit League tournament in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
