Retrievers Dominate Wildcats in America East Road Victory
LEE, N.H. (Interstat) — The Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers seized control with a dominant first half and never looked back, cruising to an 85-63 victory over the New Hampshire Wildcats in an America East Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Lundholm Gym.
The Retrievers, who entered the contest with a 60.5% win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system, outperformed that projection decisively. They led wire-to-wire, using a stifling defensive effort and balanced scoring to improve to 16-8 overall. New Hampshire fell to 8-16.
The most critical phase of the game was its opening ten minutes. UMBC established its authority immediately, starting the game on a 15-0 run before New Hampshire managed its first points. The Wildcats opened the contest missing their first nine field goal attempts and committing three turnovers, allowing the Retrievers to build an insurmountable cushion. UMBC’s defense was relentless, contesting every shot and converting Wildcat miscues into points. By the first media timeout, the tone for a lopsided afternoon was firmly set.
UMBC’s first-half performance was a model of efficiency. The Retrievers shot well from the floor and capitalized on New Hampshire’s struggles, building a 47-28 lead at halftime. The 19-point advantage proved more than enough, as the Wildcats never cut the deficit to single digits in the second half. UMBC finished with 18 points off 12 New Hampshire turnovers and outscored the Wildcats 34-26 in the paint.
Guard DJ Armstrong and forward Caden Diggs provided the offensive firepower for UMBC, each scoring 17 points. Armstrong added three assists, while Diggs, coming off the bench, hit three shots from beyond the arc. Guard Jah’Likai King also chipped in 17 points, and forward Josh Odunowo contributed 12 points and five rebounds. The Retrievers’ interior presence was anchored by center Jose Roberto Tanchyn, who hauled in 12 rebounds to go with four assists.
New Hampshire was led by guard RJ Kennedy, who scored 15 of his team-high total in the second half. Forward Belal El Shakery was a force on the glass, pulling down 14 rebounds, but was limited to just seven points. Guard Jack Graham added 13 points for the Wildcats, who shot poorly from the field and from three-point range as a team.
The game was a reversal of the teams’ first meeting on Jan. 10, which UMBC narrowly won 75-74 at home. This time, the Retrievers left no doubt, leading by as many as 26 points in the second half. The victory extends UMBC’s winning streak to three games as they continue to solidify their position in the conference standings.
New Hampshire, meanwhile, has now lost two straight and will look to regroup on the road next week. The combined score of 148 points fell well under the pregame over/under line of 139.5.
An announced crowd of 442 at Lundholm Gym watched as UMBC methodically dismantled the Wildcats. The Retrievers’ consistent ball movement, evidenced by 18 assists on their made field goals, and defensive intensity from the opening tip were the defining characteristics of the contest. New Hampshire could not match that energy or execution, resulting in a decisive conference defeat.
UMBC will look to continue its momentum when it returns home to face Vermont on Thursday. New Hampshire travels to face Massachusetts-Lowell, also on Thursday.
