Lehigh Rallies Past Lafayette in Patriot League Showdown
EASTON, Pa. (Interstat) — In a gritty Patriot League rivalry game defined by defense and decisive second-half execution, the Lehigh Mountain Hawks weathered an early storm and a hostile environment to defeat the Lafayette Leopards 78-69 on Saturday night at Kirby Sports Center.
The game, played before a capacity crowd of 1,774, saw Lehigh overcome a halftime deficit and a standout performance from Lafayette’s Caleb Williams to complete a regular-season sweep of their archrival. The victory improved Lehigh’s record to 12-15 overall, while Lafayette fell to 8-18.
The most critical phase of the contest unfolded in the opening minutes of the second half, where Lehigh transformed the game’s momentum. Trailing 37-33 at intermission, the Mountain Hawks emerged from the locker room with renewed defensive intensity. They quickly erased the deficit, tying the game at 42 on a Hank Alvey layup assisted by Joshua Ingram with just over 18 minutes remaining.
This surge ignited a pivotal 17-4 Lehigh run that spanned nearly seven minutes. The sequence was fueled by stifling defense that forced Lafayette into rushed shots and turnovers, and by efficient offense that capitalized on those mistakes. Andrew Urosevic drilled a pair of crucial three-pointers during the stretch, and Alvey continued his interior dominance. When the dust settled, Lehigh had built a 59-46 lead, its largest of the game to that point, forcing a Lafayette timeout with 9:58 on the clock.
Lafayette, led by the dynamic scoring of Williams, refused to capitulate. The Leopards chipped away, with Williams scoring 10 points in a three-minute span to cut the lead to 61-56 with just under six minutes remaining. Each time Lafayette threatened, however, Lehigh had an answer. A driving layup by Ingram, a tough turnaround jumper from Alvey, and timely free throws from Nasir Whitlock in the final minutes kept the Leopards at bay, never allowing them to get closer than five points down the stretch.
The game was a tale of contrasting efficiencies. Lehigh’s offense operated with precision, scoring 78 points on just 63 possessions for an offensive rating of 123.5. They shot 54.4% from the field, including a sharp 43.8% from three-point range. Lafayette, while shooting a respectable 50% from the floor, was hampered by a 5-for-19 performance from beyond the arc and committed 12 turnovers, which Lehigh converted into 20 points.
Hank Alvey was the cornerstone of Lehigh’s effort. The 6-foot-9 junior from Mapleton, Illinois, dominated the paint, scoring 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting, grabbing nine rebounds, and adding two assists, a block, and three steals in 35 minutes. His physical presence on both ends set the tone, particularly during the decisive second-half run.
He was ably supported by backcourt mates Joshua Ingram and Nasir Whitlock. Ingram, a sophomore from Fords, New Jersey, contributed 20 points and five assists, while Whitlock, from Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, filled the stat sheet with 15 points, five rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Andrew Urosevic provided a critical spark off the bench, hitting three three-pointers for all 11 of his points.
For Lafayette, Caleb Williams delivered a heroic performance in a losing effort. The sophomore guard from Jacksonville, Florida, played 37 minutes and poured in a game-high 26 points, dishing out six assists. Andrew Phillips added 19 points and four rebounds, and Ryan Pettit chipped in 10 points and five boards. The Leopards won the battle in transition, outscoring Lehigh 11-4 in fastbreak points, but it was not enough to overcome their perimeter shooting woes and ball-security issues.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair that saw Lafayette take control late. After a slow start from both teams, the Leopards used a 9-2 run, capped by a Christian Humphrey-Rembert three-pointer and an Andrew Phillips layup, to take a 30-23 lead with under three minutes left. They carried a 37-33 advantage into halftime, largely on the strength of Williams’ 12 first-half points and Phillips’ 11.
The victory gives Lehigh momentum as they head into the final stretch of the Patriot League schedule. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Lafayette had entered the game with a 59.7% probability to win and was a 1.5-point favorite. The combined score of 147 points surpassed the over/under line of 139.
Lehigh next travels to face Navy on Wednesday. Lafayette will look to rebound on the same night with a road game at Holy Cross.
