Colorado State at San Diego State
Preview: Colorado State at No. -- San Diego State
SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — A surging San Diego State squad looks to protect its home court and solidify its position atop the Mountain West when it hosts a struggling Colorado State team on Wednesday night at Viejas Arena.
The Aztecs (14-5) have won seven of their last eight games, including an impressive 82-71 road victory at UNLV last Saturday. Their lone stumble in that stretch was a narrow 70-69 loss at Grand Canyon. San Diego State’s offense has been potent, scoring 80 or more points in four of its last five contests.
Leading the charge is versatile guard Miles Byrd, who is coming off a 23-point, 5-assist performance against the Rebels. Over his last eight games, Byrd has averaged 14.6 points and 4.4 assists, providing consistent scoring and playmaking.
Colorado State (12-8) arrives looking to halt a two-game skid after a 65-61 home loss to Utah State last Friday. The Rams have lost three of their last four, with their only win in that span a blowout of Air Force.
The Rams will lean on guard Kyle Jorgensen, who erupted for 24 points in the loss to Utah State. His scoring punch will be vital against an Aztecs defense that has held three of its last five opponents under 70 points.
San Diego State holds a significant edge in recent form and boasts a formidable home-court advantage at Viejas. The Aztecs have not lost at home since Dec. 20. Colorado State, meanwhile, is just 2-5 in true road games this season, with those wins coming at Grand Canyon and against a struggling Boise State team.
This matchup is the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams. They will meet again in Fort Collins on Feb. 21.
