Byrd Leads Aztecs Past UNLV in Mountain West Clash

LAS VEGAS (Interstat) — In a critical Mountain West Conference clash defined by offensive efficiency and a decisive second-half surge, the San Diego State Aztecs secured an 82-71 victory over the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels on Saturday afternoon at a packed Thomas & Mack Center.

The game, a tale of two contrasting offensive approaches, saw the Aztecs execute with near-flawless precision to overcome a spirited effort from UNLV’s Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn. San Diego State improved to 14-5 overall and solidified its position in the conference race, while UNLV fell to 10-9.

The most important stretch of the contest came early in the second half, transforming a narrow margin into a commanding lead. After taking a slim advantage into halftime, San Diego State emerged from the break with a clinical 11-2 run over the first five minutes. The burst was fueled by the sharp shooting of Miles Byrd, who connected on a three-pointer, and punctuated by his steal and subsequent dunk that energized the visiting contingent and pushed the lead to double digits. UNLV, which had managed to stay within striking distance through the first 20 minutes, never recovered from that pivotal sequence, as the Aztec defense tightened and their offense continued to capitalize on every opportunity.

San Diego State’s victory was built on exceptional shot-making and maximizing possessions. The Aztecs shot a blistering 56.5 percent from the field and an even more impressive 61.5 percent from three-point range, hitting 8 of 13 attempts. They were also relentless at the free-throw line, converting 22 of 26. This efficiency resulted in a stellar offensive rating of 118.2 points per 100 possessions. UNLV, by contrast, struggled from deep, making only 7 of 21 three-point attempts, and left points at the charity stripe, hitting just 12 of 22. The Rebels finished with an offensive rating of 103.7.

Miles Byrd, the Aztecs’ top star, led all scorers with 23 points, showcasing his versatility by adding five assists. His performance was a bounce-back effort after being held to six points in a narrow loss at Grand Canyon earlier in the week. He received strong support from Taj DeGourville, a Las Vegas native who scored 13 points in his hometown return, and Reese Dixon-Waters, who also added 13 points.

UNLV’s effort was spearheaded by the dynamic play of Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn, who poured in 27 points on 11-of-23 shooting. Kimani Hamilton contributed 12 points for the Rebels, and Tyrin Jones added 10, but the team’s overall shooting inconsistencies and San Diego State’s offensive firepower proved too much to overcome.

Despite being outscored 36-32 in the paint and committing 13 turnovers that led to 21 UNLV points, San Diego State controlled the game’s tempo and key statistical battles. The Aztecs won the fast-break points battle 10-5 and, crucially, committed the same number of turnovers as UNLV while forcing the Rebels into several costly mistakes during the decisive second-half run.

The victory keeps San Diego State in the thick of the Mountain West title chase as they head into the final stretch of the regular season. The Aztecs will host Colorado State on Wednesday. UNLV, looking to regain momentum, faces a quick turnaround with a home game against New Mexico on Tuesday.

The final combined score of 153 points fell under the pregame over/under line of 149.5, a result driven by San Diego State’s methodical, high-efficiency offense that controlled the clock and limited total possessions. The Aztecs also covered the pregame spread, having been installed as 5.5-point favorites.
