Retrievers Dominate River Hawks Behind Armstrong’s 22 Points

CATONSVILLE, Md. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of efficiency and defensive pressure, the Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers defeated the Massachusetts-Lowell River Hawks 79-56 in an America East Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at the Retriever Activities Center.

The Retrievers improved to 12-7 overall and 4-2 in conference play, while the River Hawks fell to 8-13 and 2-4.

The game was decided by a dominant first-half stretch where UMBC capitalized on a prolonged UMass-Lowell scoring drought, turning a tight contest into a comfortable lead it would never relinquish. The most important sequence began with the River Hawks leading 9-7 after an Austin Green jump shot with just over 15 minutes remaining in the opening half. From that point, UMass-Lowell’s offense completely stalled, managing only two points over the next seven minutes and 19 seconds.

During that critical span, the Retrievers embarked on a decisive 18-2 run. The surge was fueled by a combination of stifling defense and opportunistic scoring. UMBC forced four turnovers and held the River Hawks to 1-of-9 shooting from the field, including several missed layups and blocked attempts. On the offensive end, the Retrievers were methodical and precise. DJ Armstrong, the game’s standout performer, ignited the run with a four-point play, draining a 3-pointer while being fouled and converting the free throw. Josh Odunowo provided consistent interior scoring, and Ace Valentine added a driving layup. When Armstrong nailed another 3-pointer at the 10:26 mark, the run was complete, giving UMBC a 25-11 advantage and firm control of the game’s tempo.

UMass-Lowell never recovered from that deficit. The River Hawks struggled offensively all afternoon, shooting a frigid 37.1% from the field and an even colder 16.7% from beyond the arc. Their offensive rating of 83.2 points per 100 possessions underscored a afternoon of inefficiency. Conversely, UMBC operated with precision, posting an offensive rating of 117.0. The Retrievers shot 49.1% from the floor and were nearly perfect from the free-throw line, making 19 of 20 attempts. They also scored 15 points off nine UMass-Lowell turnovers, while the River Hawks managed only a single point off UMBC’s seven giveaways.

DJ Armstrong led all scorers with 22 points for UMBC, adding four rebounds. He was instrumental in the first-half run that broke the game open. Josh Odunowo provided efficient secondary scoring with 17 points and five rebounds in just 23 minutes. The Retrievers also received a strong all-around contribution from Ace Valentine, who had nine points and two assists, and a formidable defensive presence from Jose Roberto Tanchyn, who grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked a shot.

For UMass-Lowell, Austin Green led the way with 14 points and six rebounds. Victor Okojie came off the bench to provide a spark with 12 points and five rebounds, but the River Hawks’ starting backcourt combined to shoot 5-of-26 from the field. The team’s four total assists highlighted their struggles to generate consistent offensive flow against the UMBC defense.

The Retrievers maintained their double-digit lead throughout the second half, extending it to as many as 23 points. UMass-Lowell made a brief push to cut the lead to 54-48 on a Green jumper with 15:51 remaining, but UMBC responded immediately with an 8-0 run, capped by a Jah’Likai King layup off a steal, to restore order and seal the victory.

The win keeps UMBC in the upper tier of the America East standings as they prepare for a road test at Vermont next Thursday. UMass-Lowell looks to regroup on the road at New Hampshire the same night. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Lowell on Feb. 28.
