Georgia Edges Missouri in Tight SEC Road Contest
COLUMBIA, Mo. (Interstat) — In a Southeastern Conference clash defined by grit and a frantic final minute, the Georgia Bulldogs escaped Mizzou Arena with a narrow 74-72 victory over the Missouri Tigers on Tuesday night. The win, sealed by a driving layup and a subsequent free throw from guard Marcus Millender in the game’s waning seconds, improved Georgia’s record to 16-3 overall and marked another resilient road performance in conference play. Missouri fell to 13-6.
The contest was a tale of contrasting halves and relentless momentum swings. Georgia, the visiting team, established early control with disruptive defense, forcing nine first-half Missouri turnovers which they converted into 12 points. The Bulldogs built a 29-26 halftime lead despite being outscored 36-22 in the paint for the game, relying on perimeter shooting and second-chance efforts.
Missouri emerged from the break with renewed vigor, unleashing a 17-6 run to seize a 43-35 advantage. The Tigers’ interior dominance, led by Mark Mitchell and Shawn Phillips, seemed poised to overwhelm the Bulldogs. Georgia, however, demonstrated the poise that has characterized its season, methodically chipping away at the deficit behind the scoring of Millender and Jeremiah Wilkinson.
The final minutes transformed into a tense, back-and-forth affair. With Georgia clinging to a 70-69 lead, Missouri’s Jacob Crews sank a clutch three-pointer from the wing with 18 seconds remaining, assisted by T.O. Barrett, sending the home crowd of 11,065 into a frenzy and putting the Tigers ahead 72-70.
Following a Georgia timeout, the Bulldogs inbounded the ball to Millender. The 5-foot-11 guard from Houston, Texas, drove decisively into the lane, navigating traffic to score a difficult layup while being fouled by Missouri’s Shawn Phillips with just five seconds on the clock. The basket tied the game, and Phillips fouled out on the play. Millender calmly sank the ensuing free throw to complete the three-point play and give Georgia a 73-72 lead.
Missouri, out of timeouts, could only manage a desperation heave that missed as time expired, securing the dramatic road win for the Bulldogs.
Millender led all Georgia scorers with 18 points in just 25 minutes of action, including the decisive three-point play. His backcourt mate, Jeremiah Wilkinson of Powder Springs, Georgia, added 14 points. The Bulldogs’ frontcourt provided crucial contributions, with Nigerian sophomore Somto Cyril scoring 11 points and grabbing key offensive rebounds while registering three blocks, and Kanon Catchings adding 12 points and three steals.
Missouri was led by Mark Mitchell’s 18 points and three assists. Jayden Stone of Perth, Australia, facilitated the offense with 13 points and a game-high six assists. The Tigers’ inside presence was felt through Shawn Phillips’ nine points and multiple blocks, and Jacob Crews’ 11 points, including the late three-pointer that briefly gave Missouri the lead.
Statistically, the game was a paradox. Missouri dominated near the basket, outscoring Georgia 36-22 in the paint and outrebounding the Bulldogs. However, Georgia’s ability to capitalize on mistakes proved the difference, scoring 19 points off 15 Missouri turnovers while committing only 10 turnovers of their own. The Bulldogs also connected on timely three-pointers to offset Missouri’s interior advantage.
The victory continues a strong stretch for Georgia, which has now won four of its last five SEC contests. The loss is a missed opportunity for Missouri, which had won three of its previous four conference games. Both teams continue league play on Saturday, with Georgia traveling to face Texas and Missouri hosting Oklahoma.
