Flames Dominate Purple Aces for Convincing Home Victory

CHICAGO (Interstat) — The Illinois-Chicago Flames used a dominant defensive performance and a balanced scoring attack to overwhelm the Evansville Purple Aces 76-49 in a Missouri Valley Conference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at UIC Pavilion.

A crowd of 663 watched the Flames improve to 10-10 overall and even their conference record, while Evansville dropped to 5-15, continuing a season of struggle.

The most important part of the game was a decisive 15-0 run by Illinois-Chicago spanning the end of the first half and the start of the second, which transformed a competitive contest into a lopsided affair. Leading 30-22 late in the opening period, the Flames closed the half with four straight points, including a floating jumper by Ahmad Henderson with one minute remaining, to take a 34-20 lead into the break.

The onslaught continued unabated after halftime. Illinois-Chicago scored the first nine points of the second half, with Elijah Crawford and Jayce Nathaniel converting layups and Rashund Washington Jr. finishing an alley-oop from Crawford. That surge extended the run to 15-0 and ballooned the lead to 43-20, effectively putting the game out of reach less than two minutes into the second period. Evansville never recovered, as its offensive woes persisted throughout the night.

Crawford, a guard from Augusta, Georgia, orchestrated the Flames’ offense with precision, scoring 16 points and dishing out seven assists in just 22 minutes. His playmaking was central to Illinois-Chicago’s efficient attack, which saw five players score at least eight points. The Flames’ depth was on full display as Henderson and Josiah Hammons each added 10 points, while Washington contributed 10 points and a block. Abdul Momoh provided interior presence with eight points and three steals.

Evansville, which shot poorly from the field, was led by Joshua Hughes. The 6-foot-10 forward from Brisbane, Australia, fought for 16 points and grabbed several key rebounds in 32 minutes of action. Bryce Quinet, a guard from Scottsdale, Arizona, added 10 points for the Purple Aces, but their efforts were insufficient against the Flames’ relentless pressure.

Illinois-Chicago’s defense was the story, forcing 21 Evansville turnovers and converting them into 27 points. The Flames also dominated in the paint, outscoring the Aces 44-20, and capitalized on second chances with 19 offensive rebounds leading to 19 points. Evansville’s offense never found rhythm, managing only 20 points in a disjointed first half and failing to mount any significant challenge after intermission.

The victory allowed Illinois-Chicago to reach the .500 mark for the first time since early December, providing momentum as they prepare for a road test at Bradley on Saturday. Evansville, mired in a difficult season, will look to regroup when they host Southern Illinois on Sunday.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Illinois-Chicago was projected with an 81.80 percent probability to win. The total score of 125 points fell under the over/under line of 136.5.
