Florida A&M Routs Mississippi Valley State in SWAC Matchup

AVALON, Miss. (Interstat) — A dominant first-half defensive performance propelled Florida A&M to a 62-48 victory over Mississippi Valley State in a Southwestern Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Monday night at a sparsely attended LeFlore County Civic Center.

The Rattlers (7-9, 3-1 SWAC) held the Delta Devils to just 17 points before halftime, building a commanding 35-17 lead that Mississippi Valley State (1-19, 0-4) could not overcome despite a more competitive second half. The win marked Florida A&M’s third straight conference victory, while the Delta Devils extended their losing streak to 12 games.

The most important part of the game was unquestionably the opening 15 minutes, where Florida A&M established immediate control with stifling defense and efficient offense. The Rattlers opened the contest with a 13-0 run, holding Mississippi Valley State scoreless for the first six minutes and 51 seconds. The Delta Devils missed their first nine field goal attempts and committed four turnovers before Michael James finally broke the drought with a layup.

Florida A&M’s defensive pressure was relentless, forcing 11 first-half turnovers and limiting Mississippi Valley State to just six made field goals on 30 attempts, a 20 percent shooting clip. The Rattlers also controlled the glass, outrebounding the Delta Devils 27-17 in the half, which included eight offensive rebounds leading to nine second-chance points.

Offensively, Florida A&M was paced by the backcourt duo of Jaquan Sanders and Micah Octave. Sanders, a 6-foot-4 guard from Far Rockaway, New York, scored 16 points and dished out six assists, often orchestrating the offense that built the large early lead. Octave, a 6-5 guard from Boca Raton, Florida, added 13 points, with several baskets coming during the decisive opening run.

The Rattlers’ lead ballooned to as many as 23 points in the first half after a three-pointer from Sanders made it 33-10. Mississippi Valley State showed signs of life just before the break, scoring seven of the period’s final nine points, but still faced an 18-point deficit.

The second half saw a role reversal in offensive production. The Delta Devils, led by Xzayvion Childress who scored all 14 of his points after halftime, found more rhythm, outscoring Florida A&M 31-27. They trimmed the deficit to 13 points on multiple occasions, the last coming at 48-35 following a three-pointer from Childress with 6:38 remaining.

Each time Mississippi Valley State threatened, however, Florida A&M had an answer. A tip-in by Octave and a powerful dunk from 6-foot-11 center Miles Ndalama of Ndola, Zambia, following a Delta Devil turnover, quickly pushed the lead back to 17 and stifled any momentum.

Mississippi Valley State’s Michael James, a 6-1 guard from Byhalia, Mississippi, also scored 14 points, playing all but 20 seconds of the contest. Daniel Mayfield, a 6-8 forward from Toccoa, Georgia, added nine points for the home team.

For Florida A&M, forward Anquan Boldin of Delray Beach, Florida, provided a boost off the bench with 10 points, while starter Tyler Shirley from Atlanta contributed eight points, three assists, and a block. The Rattlers’ defense, though less suffocating after halftime, still finished the game forcing 18 total turnovers.

The game was played in front of an announced crowd of 167. The total points scored, 110, fell well below the pregame over/under line of 141.5. Florida A&M will look to continue its conference success at home against Alcorn State on Saturday. Mississippi Valley State seeks its first SWAC win on the road at Grambling, also on Saturday.
