Golden Eagles Pull Away From Warhawks in Sun Belt Matchup
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and offensive struggles, Southern Mississippi used a decisive second-half surge to pull away from Louisiana-Monroe for a 70-60 victory in a Sun Belt Conference men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at Reed Green Coliseum.
The Golden Eagles, improving to 11-7 overall, leveraged a disruptive defense that generated 10 steals and forced 14 turnovers, converting those into 17 critical points. The Warhawks, who fell to 3-15, managed only three assists against those 14 turnovers, a disparity that underscored their difficulties in sustaining any offensive rhythm against Southern Miss’s active hands.
Louisiana-Monroe guard Krystian Lewis delivered a heroic individual effort, scoring a game-high 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds for a double-double, while adding four assists. His back-to-back three-pointers in the opening minutes staked the Warhawks to an early lead. But Southern Miss, utilizing its depth and balance, systematically chipped away. The Golden Eagles placed four scorers in double figures, led by Tylik Weeks with 20 points, six rebounds and three blocks, and Djahi Binet, who controlled the interior with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
The most important stretch of the game came early in the second half, turning a narrow contest into a comfortable Southern Miss lead. Holding a 31-28 halftime edge, the Golden Eagles opened the final period with a 12-5 run over the first four and a half minutes. The burst was fueled by their defense and efficiency in the paint, where they finished with a 34-22 advantage. A driving layup by Dylan Brumfield, who finished with 15 points, five rebounds and three assists, capped the run and gave Southern Miss a 43-33 lead with 15:43 remaining. The Warhawks would not get the deficit back to single digits for the remainder of the game.
Southern Mississippi’s ability to maintain separation was a product of consistent execution. While both teams ended the game with 68 possessions, the Golden Eagles posted an offensive rating of 102.3, compared to Louisiana-Monroe’s 88.8. The Warhawks shot just 34.5% from the field (20 of 58) and were hampered by their ball movement, with their three total assists marking a season low.
Beyond Lewis, Louisiana-Monroe received 12 points and nine rebounds from forward Renars Sondors of Latvia, and eight points from Russian guard Alex Molofeev. Southern Miss’s Israel Hart provided a key spark off the bench with 10 points, including two crucial three-pointers in the second half that helped extinguish any fleeting Warhawk momentum.
The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Southern Mississippi, which defeated Louisiana-Monroe 87-73 just nine days prior on Jan. 1. The Golden Eagles have now won three consecutive conference games. For the Warhawks, the loss extends a difficult season, though the performance of Lewis offered a bright spot. The Monroe, Louisiana, native played 40 minutes and was the primary offensive engine, but ultimately lacked sufficient support against a more cohesive Southern Miss squad.
An announced crowd of 2,840 watched as Southern Mississippi methodically tightened its defensive grip after halftime, holding Louisiana-Monroe to 32 second-half points on 10-of-29 shooting. The Golden Eagles also won the battle at the free-throw line, making 16 of 24 attempts to the Warhawks’ 11 of 16.
Southern Mississippi next travels to face Troy on Wednesday. Louisiana-Monroe returns home to host Georgia State next Saturday.
