Acuff Leads Razorbacks Past Rebels in High-Scoring SEC Affair
OXFORD, Miss. (Interstat) — In a Southeastern Conference men’s basketball game defined by a blistering start and a furious, but ultimately futile, comeback, the Arkansas Razorbacks held off the Mississippi Rebels 94-87 on Wednesday night at The Pavilion at Ole Miss.
Arkansas, improving to 12-3 overall, built a commanding 17-point halftime lead behind efficient offense and disruptive defense, only to watch Mississippi mount a relentless second-half charge that saw the Rebels trim the deficit to a single possession in the final minutes. The Razorbacks, led by a stellar performance from guard Darius Acuff Jr., made enough critical plays down the stretch to secure their third consecutive victory.
The game’s most important sequence came with just over four minutes remaining and Arkansas clinging to a 79-77 lead. The Rebels, having whittled away a deficit that was once 19 points, had seized momentum and the home crowd of 8,012 was at a fever pitch. On consecutive possessions, Arkansas’s Trevon Brazile silenced the rally. First, the 6-foot-10 forward from Springfield, Missouri, drained a crucial 3-pointer off an Acuff assist to push the lead back to five. After a Mississippi miss, Brazile struck again from beyond the arc, this time giving the Razorbacks a 85-77 cushion with 4:20 to play. Those two shots represented the decisive counterpunch, stalling Mississippi’s surge and allowing Arkansas to control the final minutes from the free-throw line.
The contest was a tale of two contrasting halves. Arkansas dominated the first, shooting 51.7% from the field and forcing nine Mississippi turnovers to take a 42-32 lead into the break. The Razorbacks’ defense was particularly potent early, holding the Rebels to 32% shooting in the opening period.
Mississippi, now 8-7, emerged from halftime transformed. The Rebels exploded for 55 second-half points, shooting a scorching 64.3% from the floor. Guard Ilias Kamardine of Marseille, France, spearheaded the rally, scoring 14 of his 16 points after intermission. Forward Malik Dia of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, added 12 of his 16 in the second half, and Brazilian guard Eduardo Klafke contributed all 11 of his points during the comeback attempt.
Despite Mississippi’s offensive eruption, Arkansas managed to match it nearly bucket for bucket, scoring 52 points of their own in the second half. The Razorbacks’ offense proved more sustainable, finishing the game with an offensive rating of 124.9 points per 100 possessions, outperforming Mississippi’s 117.6. Arkansas shot 51.7% overall and made 10 of 24 from 3-point range, while the Rebels finished at 50.8% and 8 of 26 from deep.
Acuff, a 6-foot-3 guard from Detroit, was the engine for Arkansas, delivering 26 points and nine assists in 33 minutes. He consistently broke down the Mississippi defense, creating shots for himself and others, and went a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line in the second half to help seal the win. Brazile complemented him with 18 points, including four 3-pointers. Billy Richmond of Memphis added 13 points, and Meleek Thomas of Pittsburgh also scored 13.
For Mississippi, Kamardine’s 16 points and four assists led the way. Dia’s 16 points and two blocks were central to the second-half push, and AJ Storr of Rockford, Illinois, finished with 12 points. The Rebels won the turnover battle 10-11 and out-blocked Arkansas 5-2, but were ultimately undone by their slow start and Arkansas’s superior efficiency from the 3-point line and the free-throw line, where the Razorbacks made 22 of 30 attempts.
The victory extends Arkansas’s winning streak as they prepare for a tough road test at Auburn on Saturday. Mississippi, which has lost two of its last three, will look to regroup at home against Missouri on Saturday. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Arkansas entered with a 54.3% win probability and covered the pregame spread of -4. The total score of 181 points sailed over the over/under line of 155.5.
