Texas at Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — A pair of Southeastern Conference men’s basketball teams looking to rebound from tough road losses will meet Tuesday night when the Tennessee Volunteers host the Texas Longhorns at Thompson-Boling Arena.

Texas (9-5, 0-1 SEC) arrives in Knoxville after a heartbreaking 101-98 overtime defeat to Mississippi State on Saturday. The Longhorns squandered a late lead in regulation despite a career-high 34 points from guard Dailyn Swain. The sophomore has been a bright spot, averaging 18.0 points over his last four games, but Texas has struggled for consistency, alternating wins and losses over its past six outings.

Tennessee (10-3, 0-1) also enters off a conference-opening setback, falling 86-75 at Arkansas. The Volunteers’ defense, typically a staple under coach Rick Barnes, allowed the Razorbacks to shoot 50% from the field. Offensive efficiency has been an issue at times for Tennessee, which will lean on guard Amari Evans. The junior is coming off a 16-point performance at Arkansas and has provided a scoring spark in limited minutes during non-conference play.

The matchup pits Barnes against his former program, where he coached for 17 seasons. Since taking over at Tennessee, he is 3-2 against the Longhorns. This game marks Texas’s first visit to Knoxville as an SEC member.

The Volunteers have been strong at home, winning all eight contests in Knoxville this season by an average margin of 33.5 points. Texas is 1-2 in true road games, with its lone win coming at Chaminade in Maui.

A key battle will be on the glass. Tennessee ranks among the nation’s top rebounding teams, while Texas has been outrebounded in three of its five losses. Containing Swain’s penetration and scoring will be a primary focus for the Tennessee defense.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST. The game will be televised on ESPN.
