Balanced Sooners Roll Past Delta Devils in Nonconference Finale

NORMAN, Okla. (Interstat) — In a game that followed its preordained script for 40 minutes, the Oklahoma Sooners methodically dispatched the overmatched Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils 93-69 in nonconference men’s basketball action Monday night at Lloyd Noble Center.

A crowd of 4,866 watched the Sooners improve to 10-3, using a balanced offensive attack and a decisive second-half surge to pull away. The Delta Devils, competing in the first leg of a brutal road swing against power conference opponents, fell to 1-13.

The contest’s most pivotal stretch arrived early in the second half, transforming a competitive margin into a comfortable Oklahoma lead. After Mississippi Valley State’s Patrick Punch converted a four-point play to open the half’s scoring, pulling the Delta Devils within nine at 46-37, the Sooners responded with a devastating 12-2 run over the next three minutes.

The burst was fueled by the backcourt duo of Xzayvier Brown and Nijel Pack. Brown ignited the run with a 3-pointer, and after a Delta Devil turnover, he followed with a driving layup. Pack then found Tae Davis for an alley-oop dunk, and moments later, set up Kuol Atak for another 3-pointer. When the dust settled, Oklahoma led 58-39, establishing a cushion that would never dip below 16 points for the remainder of the game.

Atak, a 6-foot-9 sophomore from Haltom City, Texas, led all scorers with 24 points, showcasing a versatile inside-out game. He connected on six 3-pointers, many coming during critical first-half stretches whenever Mississippi Valley State threatened to keep pace. Brown, a Philadelphia native, added 22 points and five assists, consistently breaking down the Delta Devil defense. Pack orchestrated the offense with 13 points and seven assists.

Mississippi Valley State was led by the backcourt tandem of Michael James and Patrick Punch. James, from Byhalia, Mississippi, scored 24 points in 39 minutes of action, while Punch, of Houston, contributed 19 points, including five 3-pointers. Delkedric Holmes facilitated the offense with 12 points and seven assists.

The first half provided fleeting hope for the visitors. James opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, and the Delta Devils traded baskets with the Sooners for the opening eight minutes, trailing just 20-17 after a Punch 3-pointer. However, Oklahoma’s superior depth and firepower began to tell. Atak hit consecutive 3-pointers, part of a personal 11-point flurry in a four-minute span, to push the Sooner lead to 31-21. Mississippi Valley State continued to battle, with Holmes scoring five quick points to cut the deficit to 34-29, but Oklahoma closed the half on a 9-5 run, capped by a Derrion Reid layup and free throw, to take a 43-34 advantage into the break.

The second half belonged entirely to Oklahoma following their early knockout run. The Sooner defense tightened, forcing 10 Delta Devil turnovers after halftime and converting them into easy transition opportunities. The lead ballooned to as many as 27 points as coach Porter Moser was able to empty his bench in the final minutes.

Oklahoma shot efficiently from the field, while Mississippi Valley State struggled to find consistent offense outside of James and Punch. The Delta Devils have now lost 13 consecutive games against Division I opponents since a season-opening win over MUW, a non-DI school. Their schedule has been among the nation’s most difficult, featuring road games at Power Five programs like Kansas State, Florida State, West Virginia and Texas A&M.

The Sooners, who entered as overwhelming favorites with a projected win probability of 100 percent according to Interstat’s ELO system, covered the pregame spread of 44.5 points. The combined score of 162 points went over the over/under line of 152.

Oklahoma now turns its attention to Southeastern Conference play, beginning with a home game against Mississippi on Saturday. Mississippi Valley State returns to Itta Bena to open Southwestern Athletic Conference action against Alabama State on Saturday, seeking a fresh start in league play after a grueling preseason slate.
