Illinois Routs Southern in Nonconference Finale

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Interstat) — The Illinois Fighting Illini, operating with ruthless efficiency, overwhelmed the visiting Southern Jaguars from the opening tip and cruised to a 90-55 victory in a nonconference men’s basketball game Monday afternoon at a sold-out State Farm Center.

A crowd of 15,544 watched the Illini improve to 10-3, while Southern fell to 4-9.

The most important part of the game was its inception, as Illinois established immediate and total dominance. The Fighting Illini opened the contest on a 17-2 run, a stretch that effectively decided the outcome within the first six minutes. The blitz was fueled by stifling defense and a fluid, unselfish offense that Southern never managed to counter.

Keaton Wagler, a 6-foot-6 guard from Shawnee, Kansas, orchestrated the onslaught with a masterful all-around performance. He finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and 10 assists, narrowly missing a triple-double in just 26 minutes of action. His playmaking was the engine for an Illinois offense that recorded assists on all but a handful of its baskets, a stark contrast to Southern’s more disjointed attack.

The Illini shot 51.7% from the field and an impressive 41.2% from 3-point range, making 14 shots from beyond the arc. They were equally proficient at the free-throw line, converting 16 of 18 attempts. Defensively, Illinois forced 13 turnovers and blocked seven shots, with 7-foot-1 Tomislav Ivisic and his 7-foot-2 brother, Zvonimir Ivisic, anchoring the paint. Tomislav Ivisic of Vodice, Croatia, contributed 11 points and seven rebounds, while Zvonimir Ivisic added 13 points and three blocks.

Southern, which shot just 34.8% overall and 21.4% from deep, was led by Michael Jacobs of Atlanta, who scored 11 points. Malek Abdelgowad of Cairo, Egypt, added 10 points off the bench.

The Illini led 46-25 at halftime, having never trailed. The second half offered more of the same, as Illinois maintained a lead of at least 20 points throughout, extending it to as many as 37. The Illini’s depth was on full display, with 10 players scoring and five reaching double figures. Jake Davis of McCordsville, Indiana, led all scorers with 15 points, all coming on 5-for-8 shooting from 3-point range.

Southern’s effort was highlighted by its work on the offensive glass, where it grabbed 12 rebounds, and by forcing 13 Illinois turnovers. However, the Jaguars could not capitalize consistently, scoring only 55 points on 65 possessions for an offensive rating of 84.9. Illinois, by contrast, scored 90 points on the same number of possessions for a blistering offensive rating of 139.4.

The game continued a challenging stretch for Southern against power-conference opponents, following recent losses to Baylor, Texas and Arkansas. Illinois, coming off a 91-48 rout of Missouri on Dec. 22, now looks ahead to the start of Big Ten Conference play.

Illinois will travel to face Penn State on Jan. 3 in Philadelphia. Southern returns to action on Dec. 31 with a road game at Alcorn State.
