Anderson Leads Texas Tech to Convincing Win Over Winthrop
LUBBOCK, Texas (Interstat) — Christian Anderson scored 29 points and Texas Tech used a dominant first-half run to pull away from Winthrop, cruising to an 87-57 victory in nonconference men’s basketball Sunday at United Spirit Arena.
The Red Raiders, improving to 10-3, overwhelmed the Eagles early with a 25-2 surge that spanned more than eight minutes, turning a narrow 11-9 lead into a commanding 36-11 advantage. The burst was fueled by stifling defense and efficient offense, as Texas Tech forced a series of turnovers and converted them into easy baskets.
Anderson, a guard from Atlanta, Georgia, was the catalyst throughout. He added six rebounds and five assists to his game-high point total, orchestrating the offense and hitting key shots whenever Winthrop showed signs of life. His performance continued a stellar stretch, following a 27-point effort in a road win at Duke six days prior.
Winthrop, which fell to 8-7, struggled to find any offensive rhythm against Texas Tech’s pressure. The Eagles committed numerous turnovers that the Red Raiders quickly translated into 19 points. Logan Duncomb led Winthrop with 11 points and nine rebounds, while Seifeldin Hendawy added nine points.
The game’s decisive stretch began with Texas Tech leading by just two points. A Donovan Atwell steal led to a Jaylen Petty three-pointer. After a Winthrop turnover, Atwell hit another three. The Red Raiders then forced a travel and a missed three-pointer, leading to a Leon Horner jumper. Another Eagle turnover resulted in a Petty three, and a blocked shot on the other end led to an Atwell three-pointer, capping the run and effectively sealing the outcome before halftime.
Texas Tech led 59-54 at the break and maintained control throughout the second half, extending the lead to as many as 30 points.
Petty supported Anderson with 20 points and six rebounds for Texas Tech. JT Toppin recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, along with two blocks. Atwell contributed 14 points, including four three-pointers.
Beyond the scoring, Texas Tech’s defensive intensity set the tone. The Red Raiders blocked seven shots and recorded 10 steals, consistently disrupting Winthrop’s offensive sets. The Eagles managed only 20 points in the paint and shot poorly from the perimeter against the active Texas Tech defense.
The victory concluded nonconference play for Texas Tech on a high note ahead of its Big 12 Conference opener against Oklahoma State on Jan. 3. The Red Raiders will look to carry the momentum from a performance defined by defensive tenacity and balanced scoring.
Winthrop, which had won four of its last five games entering the contest, begins Big South Conference play at Longwood on Wednesday. The Eagles will aim to regroup from a game where they were never able to match the physicality or execution of their power-conference opponent.
The game played out largely as expected, with Texas Tech easily covering the pregame spread. The total points fell well under the projected over/under, a testament to the Red Raiders’ defensive effort that held Winthrop to its second-lowest scoring output of the season.
