Alabama Outlasts Illinois in High-Scoring Clash
CHICAGO (Interstat) — In a high-octane, back-and-forth affair that came down to the final seconds, the Alabama Crimson Tide outlasted the Illinois Fighting Illini 90-86 in a men’s NCAA Division I basketball game Wednesday night at a raucous LeClaire Park.
A crowd of 17,775 witnessed a contest defined by offensive runs and crucial individual performances, with Alabama’s Labaron Philon delivering a game-high 24 points to help seal the victory. The win improved Alabama’s season record to 3-1, while Illinois suffered its first loss, falling to 4-1.
The first half set the tone for the evening, featuring eight lead changes and neither team able to build a substantial advantage. Illinois, fueled by the hot shooting of Andrej Stojakovic, managed to take a narrow 42-41 lead into halftime. Stojakovic poured in 17 of his 26 points before the break, consistently answering Alabama’s baskets.
The Crimson Tide’s offense, however, operated with greater efficiency throughout the night. Alabama scored its 90 points on 78 possessions, resulting in an offensive rating of 115.5. Illinois, by contrast, managed an offensive rating of 105.6, scoring 86 points on 81 possessions. This disparity proved critical in a game where the final margin was just four points.
Alabama emerged from the locker room with renewed purpose, quickly seizing control. A 10-2 run early in the second half, capped by a driving layup from Philon, gave the Crimson Tide a lead they would not relinquish, though the Fighting Illini never allowed them to feel comfortable.
Every time Alabama threatened to pull away, Illinois had an answer, often from Stojakovic or point guard Kylan Boswell. Boswell finished with 22 points and a game-high seven assists, orchestrating the Illinois offense and keeping the pressure on the Alabama defense.
The Crimson Tide’s victory was a product of balanced scoring and key contributions from its bench. Alongside Philon’s 24 points, Aden Holloway added 11 points and three assists, while Houston Mallette and Keitenn Bristow each chipped in 10 points. Taylor Bol Bowen provided a significant interior presence with 12 points and two blocks.
For Illinois, Stojakovic’s 26 points led all scorers, but the supporting cast beyond Boswell struggled to find a consistent rhythm. David Mirkovic finished with 10 points and four assists, and Ben Humrichous added 11 points, but the team’s shooting from the free-throw line proved costly. Illinois connected on just 13 of its 22 attempts from the charity stripe, a 59 percent clip that left valuable points on the floor. Alabama, meanwhile, was more proficient, making 17 of 23 free throws.
The game was ultimately decided in the final minute. With Alabama clinging to a two-point lead, Philon drove the lane and hit a difficult floating jumper to extend the advantage to four with under 30 seconds remaining. Illinois had opportunities to tie or take the lead on its ensuing possession, but a well-defended three-point attempt from Boswell missed its mark, and Alabama secured the defensive rebound.
From there, the Crimson Tide closed the game out at the free-throw line, with Philon and Mallette sinking critical shots to ice the game and secure the hard-fought road victory.
Statistically, the game was remarkably even. Both teams committed 10 turnovers. Alabama shot 45.5 percent from the field, while Illinois shot 42.5 percent. From beyond the arc, the Crimson Tide held a slight edge, making 13 three-pointers to Illinois’ 11. The Fighting Illini won the battle on the offensive glass, grabbing 12 rebounds to Alabama’s nine, but could not fully capitalize on the extra opportunities.
The contest was a significant early-season test for both programs. Alabama rebounded from a loss to Purdue in its previous outing, demonstrating resilience and offensive firepower against a previously undefeated opponent on a neutral court. Illinois, despite the loss, showed it could compete at a high level, with Stojakovic and Boswell forming a potent offensive duo.
Alabama now looks ahead to a matchup against the Gonzaga Bulldogs in Las Vegas on Monday. Illinois will return to Champaign to host Long Island on Saturday.
