Cornell’s Offensive Onslaught Overwhelms Dartmouth in Ivy League Matchup

HANOVER, N.H. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a blistering offensive display, the Cornell men’s basketball team avenged an earlier loss and eclipsed the 110-point mark for the first time this season, defeating Dartmouth 111-90 in an Ivy League contest Saturday at Leede Arena.

From the opening tip, Cornell established a pace and shooting proficiency that Dartmouth could not match. The Big Red connected on 63.1% of its field goal attempts, including a staggering 19 of 38 from three-point range, to build a commanding 59-43 halftime lead and never looked back. The victory improved Cornell to 15-12 overall, while Dartmouth fell to 11-16.

The most critical phase of the game occurred in the opening minutes of the second half. After a competitive start to the period, Cornell unleashed a decisive 11-2 run that effectively put the game out of reach. The surge was fueled by the backcourt tandem of Jake Fiegen and Jacob Beccles, who consistently broke down the Dartmouth defense. This run stretched a 14-point lead to 23, silencing the home crowd of 1,210 and allowing Cornell to cruise through the final 15 minutes.

Cornell’s offensive efficiency was historic. The Big Red scored 111 points on just 78 possessions, an offensive rating of 142.1 that underscored a nearly flawless performance. They assisted on only five of their 41 made field goals, highlighting a afternoon of exceptional individual shot-making. Dartmouth, by contrast, managed 90 points on 79 possessions but was undone by Cornell’s scorching 50% shooting from beyond the arc and 63.1% shooting overall.

Jake Fiegen led all scorers with 22 points for Cornell, adding two assists and two blocks in just 21 minutes. Jacob Beccles orchestrated the offense with a team-high five assists to go with 14 points. Adam Hinton scored 16 points, while Josh Baldwin and Cooper Noard added 11 and 12 points, respectively. The bench contributed significantly, with Mateen Rafiq scoring nine quick points.

Dartmouth was led by Cameron McNamee, who scored 21 points, all from beyond the arc and the free-throw line, going 5 for 5 from three-point range. Jayden Williams also scored 21 points and Brandon Mitchell-Day added 18 points, three assists and a block. The Big Green shot a respectable 44.1% from the field and an impressive 30 for 33 from the free-throw line, but it was no match for Cornell’s incendiary shooting.

The game was a stark reversal from the teams’ first meeting on Jan. 10, when Dartmouth defeated Cornell 102-91. In that contest, the Big Green’s offense controlled the day. This time, Cornell’s shooting clinic from start to finish ensured there would be no repeat, as they consistently answered any modest Dartmouth run with another barrage of baskets.

Defensively, Cornell struggled to contain Dartmouth without fouling, sending the Big Green to the line 33 times. However, the Big Red compensated with efficient ball security, committing only 10 turnovers, and by dominating the glass with a significant rebounding advantage that led to 15 second-chance points.

The result provided a positive conclusion to the regular season for Cornell, which had experienced inconsistent results in February. For Dartmouth, the loss concluded a challenging conference campaign, though the performance of McNamee and Williams offered bright spots.

The Ivy League tournament implications of the game were minimal, as both teams’ seeding was largely determined prior to the contest. Nevertheless, Cornell’s record-breaking offensive output served as a potent reminder of its capabilities heading into the postseason, while Dartmouth was left to grapple with the difficulty of defending an opponent operating at peak efficiency.
