Seton Hall Holds Off Xavier for Road Win in Big East Clash

CINCINNATI (Interstat) — In a gritty, defensive-minded Big East clash that saw neither team lead by more than nine points, Seton Hall grinded out a 77-68 victory over Xavier on Tuesday night at Cintas Center, sweeping the season series and bolstering its postseason resume.

The game, played before a crowd of 9,884, was a tale of efficiency and poise from the visiting Pirates, who improved to 20-10 overall and 11-8 in conference play. Xavier, fighting to avoid a losing regular season, fell to 14-16 and 5-14 in the Big East.

The most critical phase of the contest came late in the second half, with Seton Hall clinging to a narrow lead. After a Malik Messina-Moore layup brought Xavier within 64-62 with just over three minutes remaining, the Musketeers had multiple opportunities to tie or take the lead but were undone by empty possessions and a key defensive stand.

On the ensuing trip, Seton Hall guard Adam Clark, who led all scorers with 16 points, hit a crucial pull-up jumper to push the lead back to four. Xavier then missed a three-pointer, and after a defensive rebound, the Pirates worked the clock before TJ Simpkins connected on another mid-range shot to make it a six-point game with 1:37 left.

Xavier’s final push was stifled by a turnover from Filip Borovicanin, stolen by Simpkins, and a blocked shot by Josh Rivera on a Borovicanin drive in the final 20 seconds. Seton Hall sealed the game at the free-throw line, with Simpkins hitting two foul shots to extend the lead to nine, effectively putting the game out of reach in the final seconds.

The game was characterized by physical defense and sporadic offense. Seton Hall won despite shooting just 29 of 62 from the field and 6 of 21 from three-point range. Their advantage came at the free-throw line, where they converted 13 of 14 attempts, and from a slight edge in ball security, committing only eight turnovers to Xavier’s 10.

Xavier, which shot 25 of 59 overall and 9 of 22 from deep, was led by Borovicanin’s 15 points and seven assists. Center Pape N’Diaye provided a significant interior presence with 10 points and three blocks in just 15 minutes, while Messina-Moore added 12 points. The Musketeers blocked seven shots as a team but were hampered by a 9-for-13 performance at the charity stripe.

Seton Hall’s offense was balanced behind Clark. Mike Williams added 10 points and five assists, AJ Staton-McCray scored 12, and Stephon Payne contributed nine points off the bench. The Pirates also won the possession battle, scoring 77 points on 66 trips for an offensive rating of 117.3, compared to Xavier’s 107.6 rating on 63 possessions.

The first half set the tone for a tight contest, with Seton Hall taking a narrow 33-32 lead into halftime. The Pirates never trailed in the second half, but Xavier stayed within striking distance until the final two minutes, when the Pirates’ execution and the Musketeers’ missed opportunities decided the outcome.

The victory marked a bounce-back for Seton Hall, which had lost a close road game to then-Connecticut in its previous outing. For Xavier, the loss continued a difficult conference campaign, though they had entered the game as slight statistical favorites according to predictive metrics.

Seton Hall will conclude its regular season at home against Saint John’s on Friday. Xavier will finish its season on the road at Villanova on Saturday.
