Illinois State Edges Northern Iowa in Missouri Valley Showdown

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant start and a desperate, frantic finish, Illinois State weathered a furious second-half rally from Northern Iowa to escape the McLeod Center with a 71-69 victory in a Missouri Valley Conference men’s basketball clash on Wednesday night.

The Redbirds, who led by as many as 17 points in the first half and took a 28-23 lead into the break, saw that advantage evaporate completely under a second-half onslaught from the Panthers. Northern Iowa, fueled by a 46-point second-half performance, surged ahead and held a 69-65 lead with just 23 seconds remaining in the game.

The final sequence provided the night’s defining drama. After Illinois State’s Johnny Kinziger cut the deficit to two with a jumper, Northern Iowa’s Will Hornseth committed a critical turnover on the ensuing inbounds pass with 12 seconds left. Kinziger was then fouled on a drive with 2.2 seconds on the clock. The freshman guard from De Pere, Wisconsin, calmly sank the first free throw to pull Illinois State within one but intentionally missed the second.

The carom was tipped out of bounds by Northern Iowa’s Leon Bond with 2.1 seconds left, giving Illinois State possession under its own basket. On the inbounds play, Kinziger curled off a screen, caught the pass, and launched a contested 12-foot jump shot from the baseline as time expired. The ball swished through the net, silencing the crowd of 3,907 and completing a stunning comeback for the visitors after they had nearly surrendered a large lead.

Kinziger finished with 14 points, but his final two were the most consequential. Boden Skunberg led the Redbirds with 14 points, while Chase Walker provided crucial efficiency off the bench with 13 points and five assists in just 21 minutes. For Northern Iowa, the loss was a collective effort, with five players scoring between 9 and 13 points. Trey Campbell and Ben Schwieger each had 13, Will Hornseth added 13 points and three assists, and Leon Bond finished with 11.

The game’s trajectory was a tale of two halves, heavily influenced by shooting. Illinois State built its early lead by connecting on 10 of 27 three-point attempts for the game, many in the first half, while Northern Iowa started ice-cold. The Panthers, however, found their mark after halftime, shooting a blistering 9 for 16 from beyond the arc for the game to fuel their comeback. Northern Iowa’s 61.1% effective field goal percentage was ultimately bested by Illinois State’s ability to create more opportunities, thanks to a 7-4 advantage in offensive rebounds and 11 forced turnovers.

The victory improved Illinois State to 19-11 overall, while Northern Iowa fell to 18-12. The result also secured a regular-season series sweep for the Redbirds, who defeated the Panthers 59-54 in Normal on Jan. 21.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Northern Iowa entered the game with a 70.6 percent probability to win. The combined score of 140 points surpassed the over/under line of 129.5.

Illinois State will look to build on the dramatic win when it hosts Belmont on Sunday. Northern Iowa, left to rue the final-seconds collapse, travels to face Drake, also on Sunday.
