Jacksonville State at Florida International
Conference USA Rivals Meet as Jacksonville State Visits Florida International
WESTCHESTER, Fla. (Interstat) — Two teams jockeying for position in the Conference USA standings will meet Wednesday when the Florida International Golden Panthers host the Jacksonville State Gamecocks.
The matchup at Ocean Bank Convocation Center features teams with identical overall records in league play. Jacksonville State (10-9, 3-3 CUSA) and Florida International (10-10, 3-3) are both looking to build momentum from weekend victories.
The Gamecocks enter on a two-game winning streak, including a convincing 75-58 home victory over Middle Tennessee last Friday. Guard AC Bryant led the way with 22 points in that win, continuing a strong stretch of play. Over his last eight games, Bryant is averaging 15.1 points, including a 22-point performance in a Jan. 4 loss at Liberty.
Florida International snapped a three-game skid with an 81-78 road win at New Mexico State on Saturday. The Golden Panthers were powered by a dominant performance from forward Corey Stephenson, who posted 25 points and 12 rebounds. Stephenson is averaging 17.4 points and 6.4 rebounds over his last seven contests.
This game is a quick rematch of a Jan. 7 meeting in Jacksonville, where the Gamecocks secured a 71-64 victory. Bryant was held to five points in that game, but Mostapha El Moutaouakkil added 15 points for Jacksonville State. Stephenson scored 17 points in the loss for FIU.
Both teams have shown inconsistency in January. Jacksonville State’s recent wins are bracketed by double-digit losses to Sam Houston and Kennesaw State. Similarly, Florida International’s recent road win followed a stretch where they lost four of five games.
A key battle will be on the interior, where Stephenson’s rebounding prowess for FIU will challenge a Jacksonville State frontcourt that includes Emondrek Erkins-Ford, who had 14 points in the last meeting.
With the conference season nearing its midpoint, Wednesday’s game offers a chance for either squad to climb above .500 in league play and gain a tiebreaker advantage. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
